Phoenix Police are investigating the mysterious death of a child. Early Friday morning police said a 7-year-old girl was found dead at an apartment near I-17 and Glendale.

Detectives said they haven’t determined a cause of death. Authorities said the mother dropped her daughter off at her fiance's the fiance told police he couldn’t wake up the girl.

Neighbors at the quiet apartment complex were shaken up by the child’s death.

“It’s sad. I can’t believe it. It’s so close to home,” said neighbor Caitlin New.

Just after 6am, Phoenix Police responded to a 9-1-1 call from the fiance.

“Upon arrival officers and firefighters found the 7-year-old little girl. She was found unresponsive and pronounced deceased by Phoenix Fire,” said Officer Luis Samudio with the Phoenix Police Department.

Samudio said the fiance and his child were also home at the time. Neighbor Helen Eleya said he came to her apartment shaken up.

“The neighbor, he’s friendly with my husband and he just knocked on the door this morning. He was asking for a cigarette because he was so nervous about the situation,” said Eleya.

Authorities also searched the mother’s home located further south of the apartment complex. Neighbors described the couple and their kids.

“The kids don’t seem happy, never happy since they moved in,” New said.

“I’ve met them and they’ve been to my son’s birthday party. They seemed like very nice people,” said neighbor Julis Zamoi.

Phoenix Police are interviewing the mother and her finance. At this point, no one has been taken into custody. Authorities have not released any names.

Pair questioned in kid's death

PHOENIX - Police on Friday were questioning a Phoenix couple in the death of the woman's 7-year-old daughter.

The woman's fiancée called 911 about 6:30 a.m. to report the child was not breathing. He told investigators the girl wouldn't respond when he tried to wake her, police said.

Emergency personnel confirmed the child was dead when they arrived at the apartment near Interstate 17 and Glendale Avenue. The girl and at least one other child had been staying with the fiancée at his home while their mother worked a night shift.

Investigators have not determined if foul play was involved. No arrests have been made.
