It's her first Presidential election! She's a Demo-Greenie, so this should be really interesting...
As for me, I'm kinda torn...
Obama or my favorite.
He's lost the '84 and '88 elections, but I think he's a shoo-in this time!!

Hi,
I'm a newbie here. Registered recently and haven't posted yet.
I was watching CNN yesterday evening before the results came in (I'm in Ireland, so went to bed before any of them came in), but somebody had sent an email to CNN, which I think summed up the emotion beautifully.
"Rosa Parks sat, so that Martin could march. Martin marched so that Obama could run. Obama ran so that our children could fly."
They didn't say who sent it in, but it's so full of hope.

I felt that McCain had personal things he was dealing with. I agree that he is a nice person and firmly believes what he believes. No one could or should question his dedication to America. I think it will be a long time before we learn of his personal issues, if any, because he seems aloof in that area and his principles, which I believe are strong, may not allow him to speak on them.

Bush's big mistake was not reversing some of the idiot policies Clinton put in place. Granted, he was a tad distracted with 9-11 and such, but because he did not act he has been blamed for the whole mess which just is not the case. It was the Clinton administration that pressured Fanny Mea to lower their lending standards among other things.
I am anxious to hear who Obama has in mind for his cabinet. As one of the most inexperienced presidents in history, the key to his success or failure will be the folks that are in place to help him. JMO

I was actually very proud for making history yesterday, but I also knew months before that he was the man for the job, I listened to his speeches, he identified with everything that is going on here in MI and across the country, MI has the highest unemployment record and foreclosures and this is pretty sad when you think that all the major car manufacturers are here and they have been laying off people right and left, guys who had worked on the assembly lines for 30 years, paying off a mortgage, putting their children through college, thought they had job security as the world needs vehicles and found out when they got a pink slip that they didn't and while some ended up with severance pay, most went on the unemployment line and can only collect for 26 weeks!!! What are they supposed to do at age 55? Work at Burger King?
Obama came here several times, but not in my area, but I sent him an e-mail and I got a letter back from Michelle!! I knew the minute he got IN, OH, and PA, McCain was toast, and yeah he got the southern vote for the most part, but by the time most of those precincts were reporting, Obama already had 270 votes!!! It was a total victory for the middle class, now jobs won't be out-sourced, he won't hire any of his college buddies, he won't be handing out big tax breaks to the rich, and he will be sending our troops home where they belong. If we were actively looking for Bin Laden, I would say, OK ,keep them in Afganistan or Pakistan, but we aren't. I can't wait for him to be our 44 president, I cried during his victory speech and so was my friend, we were on the phone with each other for about an hour and it is too bad his granny died, but she died a proud, happy woman and I bet up in heaven Martin Luther was looking down and shining his light on Obama!:patriot:

To go back and discuss, who did what that led up to what, would take a three year course in history. What experience did McCain have-more time on the job without a promotion and three failed promotion interviews? I prefer someone who has demonstrated the ability to put forth a winning plan or recognizes one when he hears it, as opposed to one, who goes off haphazardly and relishes in being called the under dog or being placed in a disadvantaged position, believes that it is more important to win a war that should never have been started, regardless of the cost in human lives and money. The idea is not how much experience you have but what you have learned from that experience. Why do you think Powell left Bush? Why do you think others resigned? Did Bush have the proper people in place to tell him the country was in economic peril and something should be done? Did the Mac believe the economy was fundamentally sound? Oh yeah, he meant the workers. Did he know that unemployment was near record highs? Let's cast a vote for America and believe that the majority knew who they wanted for President.

Yeah and if you go three years before that, Clinton probably forced Fannie Mae to lower their lending standards because of a rule implemented during the Bush/Reagan administration, which in turn made their rules due to the Carter administration. It is a never ending cycle IMO.
Sometimes it is best to look through the eyes of someone else to get a fair assessment of how things really are. The rest of the world hates us. No it is not because they are envious of our freedoms, or because we are the richest. They hate us because the Bush administration acted like a self appointed sheriff in a lawless land. We lied about wars, took away civil liberties, insulted allies who would not jump on our " Let's bomb Iraq" bandwagon. (Anyone remember freedom fries? lmao)
To me, it is a dawn of a new era. For the 1st time in years, the rest of the world is finally saying nice things in regard to the United States and it feels very good to hear. Of course I want a president that puts the natural interest of the US first, just not at the total expense and disregard for the rest of the world. :)

sorry this has turned into just another political thread.
BUT :) since it has.......
Four years ago I didn't vote in the presidential election although I did vote in the other elections then. I was disenchanted and unhappy with the choices and the fact that the election was a compilation of negativity.
My biggest problem with the current administration is the obvious slant or favoritism towards corporate America. I'm already familiar with the fact that we need healthy businesses, etc. and don't want to hear another lecture on the importance of healthy business to our economy. However, I'm sick of seeing W and his cronies support or prop up big business (including the banking industry) at the expense of the average working American.
One example would be the signing into law by W the legislation making it much more difficult to file for personal bankruptcy. This law was signed into effect while corporations like Delta, et al. filed for reorganization without going out of business. As a matter of fact, it isn't unusual for large corporations to reorganize through bankruptcy laws without much stigma; it happens everyday. But let a regular member of society file and all of a sudden they're shirking their responibility to America and just not doing their part.
I for one am sick of the hypocrisy. Evidently many others were too (for whatever reason) and a change was made. I hope and pray that the change will do the country good.

ALLMO,
R
Great point about the Bankruptcy law change under Bush. If i remember correctly this was advanced by major banks to make it more difficult for citizens to file bankruptcy when credit card debt became a problem for them.

Holy crud. . . I was going to vote after I dropped my daughter off at school, but the parking lot looks like the Mall on Christmas eve!!! Going to wait for a few hours.
Will be voting for McCain. :patriot:
(I've lived in countries with socialized medicine and even had one of my kids in one. . . sorry, but I don't believe it is the answer for America).
"Socialized medicine" ?
Do you mean
Medicare for the elderly?
Medicaid for the poor?
Health care for all citizens?

Health care for all citizens?I can't speak for other states, but Arkansas has a great program for kids called ARKids. I'm not sure about the elderly. I'm all for tweaking the present system so that more of those in need have access to healthcare. My personal experience was that socialized medicine provides mediocre healthcare for the masses and good to excellent care for those wealthy enough to pay for a private doctor. When I was pregnant overseas in such a system I was not given an exam or screened to see if I was high-risk. . . I was just told to continue going to a gynecologist and to come back when I was seven months pregnant. At that point I would be assigned and OB/GYN! At seven months!!! And of course I had NO CHOICE who my doctor would be. I have heard that other European nations are better but keep in mind the price that individuals are paying. The idea that the healthcare is "free" is ludicrous. Just look at the tax rate in the countries that have it. Many families here pay hundreds of dollars a MONTH for insurance, with "free" healthcare they might be paying the same in taxes to have NO CHOICE. To overhaul the system will be a huge burden on taxpayers period. Wouldn't it be better to work on changing the present system rather than lower the standard of care for the majority? JMO

After living most of my life in the US and then moving to Canada, I prefer a socialized health care system. It's not perfect, but then none of them are. I can go to the doctor when I'm sick without having to worry about how I'm going to pay for it. OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers most medical cost except meds and hubby's insurance through Canada Post covers 80% of those, and most of our dental and eye care.
I had to have surgery a few years ago awhich I could not have gotten it done in the US if I had still been living there because I wouldn't have been able to pay for it. I would have died without it.
Yes, we have higher taxes but, in the long run it's worth it, in my opinion.

I don't know that the plan is socialized medical care. I think it is government mandated health care. I will have to research that.

Funny, I have close friends in the UK that state the exact opposite.
Well I am sure it depends on what side of the financial bracket one falls in.
If you make good money and can afford insurance plus what insurance doesn't cover, then yeah I am sure one will support the US's way of health care.
If I was poor, I would take waiting a month to have my problem corrected then possibly die in the United States due to not being able to afford it.

I know I am late posting this (school has me by the throat) but I voted for Mccain, knowing Utah would be a red state no matter how I voted. I am not 100% sold on Obama, yet. I want to see how things go the first year he is Pres. His wife Michelle, (to me anyways) is NOT First Lady material. I am not a big fan of her, but as long as she stands behind her hubby, in him starting America's most difficult job, then I guess she is ok.
I know there are ALOT of Bush haters out there, but I for one, will be relieved for him to be out of the spot light, and to slow things down, and truly enjoy life. I am sure it wasn't easy for him to stand there on national tv, knowing his ratings are down the crapper. He is a good God fearing man, and I think he deserves at least some respect, as our current Chief Commander (or whatever the calling is called).
Ok, just don't throw too many stones at me for defending Bush!!!!:)

I think you are correct that the Office of President deserves a great amount of respect, and to be honest I voted for W the first time he ran partly because of the reason you gave.
But he, as well as Jimmy Carter it could be argued, are good examples of how a God fearing man doesn't necessarily make a good President.

I think at his core McCain is a good person. It just seems that the Neocons took over his campaign and led him in the wrong direction. He is still a u.s. senator and can be of grest service to his country and the people.
I totally agree on John McCain and believe he is a candidate who simply had the wrong timing. McCain gave the most eloquent concession speech I've ever heard.
I really believe (although many of my friends disagree) we were in a win-win situation in this election.

Even though I lean towards Republican views, and I did vote for Mccain, I just don't think I could have handled hearing him refer to us as "my friends" for 4 stinking years!!!!!! I knew (right along with half of America) 6 months ago that Obama would be the next Pres. A week later I am totally in love with this man and his family and I took offense the other day by something one of those idiotic women on the View that talked smack about Michelle! That Joy said that Michelle's victory dress made her look like a lava lamp and who is she to judge? I never watch the show, I think they are a bunch of cackling hens, even with Rosie gone, things have not improved, and I think they have way too much time on their hands and getting paid to voice their view and rhetoric. And they had Michelle on the show! And that Elizabeth is a whine ass! The only one that has some class is Whoopie! I think that both Barack and Michelle are the new darlings and every critic out there will be dissing their clothes and for the record, I think they both dress very well, very classy, however, I don't think Michelle is going to don any pill box hats anytime soon!! They are a young, upwardly mobile couple, and I think this is very refreshing and God help me, it is a joy to watch them, and it beats by a long shot than seeing that Laura Bush in one of her frumpy outfits with that fake smile plastered on her face, waving her hand like she is the Queen, and George with that goofy redneck look on his face as well!! And let's not forget Barbara Bush, she put a new spin on dowdy duds, she always looked like she was Senior's mother than his wife! Nancy Reagan dressed very classy as well, but would spend thousands of dollars to do so and then let the world know how much she spent, not classy. Hillary, well, Hillary does off the rack really well, and is not afraid to let you know she bought her pantsuit at TJ Max and that fact actually impresses me. Michelle clearly likes good clothing, but I don't see too many Vera Wangs or Versace, she might actually get her clothes from a designer that I don't have a clue who they are, and whatever she is doing, she is doing it well!! Enough about clothes!
I truly think that we, who elected him will not be disappointed, but when I think of the enormous challenges he faces, the economy, that stupid, senseless war, health care, people will scrutinize his every move, and come on, this mess that redneck yahoo got us into will not go away the minute Barack takes office, putting a band-aid on a stab wound is not a quick fix, it might take him the first four years to undo what Mr. Goofy has done! I truly feel that he will elect his Cabinet members very carefully, he will have totally qualified people to run, say, Homeland Security, I can't stand Michael Chertoff, he will elect a new Secretary of State, can't stand Condoleeza either, and other positions will not be filled by college buddies or cronies. I mean who can ever forget Bush and the "you are doing a heck of a job Brownie" and people were dropping like flies in the Katrina ravaged areas and Brown sits there on his ass doing nothing because he did not know what to do!!! Embellishing his resume should have resulted in more than a resignation, how do you go from just being a clerk in EMS services in OK City to running horse show events at Saratoga to being Director of FEMA????? Only if the president was your **** brother!!! I am surprised some of the ranch hands never made it to the White House, oops, they are minions, servants if you will and if they clean your horse stalls, you will not be invited to a White House gala!! I can see Barack and Michele inviting folks from all walks of life to events at 1600 PA Ave!! Hell, I wish they would invite me!!! I am so looking forward to Jan 20th 2009. A new chapter will be written about this country. How African Americans suffered in silence for many years, how they would be made to sit in the back of the bus, they could not eat at any restaurant of their choosing, I remember those signs vividly on the doors, they could not even get a decent education because they were not allowed in Ivy League schools, and now, in the 21st century, we have a great man as our next president who is African American, surely, Martin Luther is now saying the THE DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!!!:patriot::beer:

OMG I see I have opened a can of worms here. I NEVER watch the View, because I can't stand to listen to the (as you put it-cackling) that goes back and forth. I have loved Whoopi since Sister Act, and Ghost. She is the only one worth listening to. As far as how Mrs. Obama dresses is really a shallow topic for them to discuss!!! What, high school again? I never had a problem with how she dresses. It is things that she said, when all of the controversy was going on with what their Pastor said, that bothered me. I don't want to even get near a debate on that. You have your views, and I respect them, and I expect the same from you. Only time will tell of the true nature of the Obamas. I hope that the hype about them is right, and we didn't jump to conclusions JUST to oust George Bush. I am defending Laura Bush. I really like her, and she seems genuine. She is kind in the way she speaks, and so is her mother in-law, Barbara Bush. The whole Bush clan have a bad rap because of things that went on (that weren't necessarily G.W.B's fault). I blame stupid Nanci Pelosi for not passing 99% of what GW has TRIED to accomplish, as far as funding the troops, (I have an uncle who is a Chief Commander, and he really believes in his mission there) and not letting him basically succeed as President. Reading about how things really go down in Washington was really an eye opener. Congress really runs the country, and the poor schtick that gets to be Pres. is the mouth piece of what goes on. The Pres. can offer ideas, etc, but it really comes down to Congress.

You are correct in my opinion SuperV. I am not happy with GWB, but he did not start all this mess we are having either. It goes way back. Who started the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco? The Clintons. Who signed the NAFTA sending most of our job overseas? Bill Clinton. I don't have any answers but I do hope we can have a brighter future, maybe be more conservative and not hand everything to our children on a silver platter and in my opinion that may help our economy.
