I am famous for having a very dry sarcastic sense of humor. most of the time it is a good thing. Hard to express with writing and reading tho!

I am new to here, but I thought this was a cute thread. I am actually known for being able to walk on my hand for up to 45 minutes. I am not famous for that, but I am proud of it.

Well Suse, you think I argue around the point? There's not many people I know who would agree with you on that. Tender heart, well yes Suse you have that. But the world has to have people who don't see the glass half full. I think too many of them are responsible for the economic mess the global econ is falling into now. Maybe if there were more like me who see the glass half empty and plan for contingencies..but then again that's just MO.

I knew there was a reason I like you....you are funny JB!

What a cool thread Sara- Hi to all getting to know some of you from other threads. I like CL much better than other board i was on. Not sure what i am infamous for-my friends tell me i have a really good heart. I would have to say i am always laughing. Our family says we live the Omen-if it can happen it will-dum stuff like falling down with a plate of food at a function. We all laugh as we get it. Last one i did was clicking across the floor in my new heels at a wedding reception in plainview after leaving the ladies room. My sister is killing herself laughing. I had a light days stuck to my heel. Clean one Thank gawd. I laughed my azzzzz off. One of the funniest ones to me was-stood up in a wedding about 10 yrs. ago. A good friend of mine were discussing brands of thigh high stockings. I was complaining about the brand i had bought as they were falling down to my knees. Thanks gawd we were in long dresses. She and i go into the ladies room. I have my back to the door. I am raising my long dress up to my whatever to show her these stockings. I no sooner get the words out of my mouth "Have u ever seen anything like this" When another women walks in. All she can see is me from the back raising my dress and hear what i said. My friend and i were laying on the counters laughing so hard we were crying.

LOL, Your family sounds like mine beemeup. We all have a very good sense of humor and when we get together it is really amazing what we come up with. I have a thigh high story!!! You just reminded me of it!!! A few years ago, I went to a dance with a tall skinny friend, who had a massive crush on this guy. She spent ALL day primping, and pruning herself, knowing her crush would be at the dance. She decided to wear thigh highs, thinking it made her feel "sexy, and confident." We were at the dance for about an hour, when her crush walked in the room with his friends. She started acting stupid, trying to get his attention. About a half hour later, he finally came over, and asked her to dance. She was SOOOO petrified, she could barely move!!!! Right before she went out on the floor with him, she grabbed me, and demanded me to ask one of his friends to dance, and to dance next to her and this guy. I thought his friends were dorks, but asked the cutest one to dance. Things were going ok, and my friend was putting the moves on the guy, trying to get closer to him. At the end of the song, he thanked her, and she asked him to dance again. Right on cue, both of her thigh highs fell down around her ankles!!!! I wanted to laugh my guts out, but knew it would devastate her even more!!! She reached out for me for support, and I tried to tell her to take them off, and stuff them in her pockets. Instead, out of fear, she waddled in them to the wall, took them off, and ran to the bathroom bawling!!!! Her crush was a gentleman, and asked me if she will be ok. His friends were in hysterics. He waited for her by the bathroom to come out, and I told her this. She was SOOO petrified, she stayed in the bathroom until the end of the dance!!!! He was still there when she finally came out, and told her he wanted to be sure she was ok. She thanked him, grabbed my arm, and ran out of the building laughing like a school girl. He eventually got a girlfriend, and my friend stalked him for a while after!!!! :punch:

:punch:

SV, that is the reason they make garter belts, hehehehe....Great story by the way, Thank you for giving me a laugh..~Suz

Depends on the site. If it's high traffic one it's going to cost more than a site with a small member base. Also if the site doesn't prune posts they can use up a fair amount of space and bandwidth but most generally aren't that expensive to run.

After 10+ years up here I still haven't gotten used to Thanksgiving being before Halloween though. The nice thing is that we celebrate the US one too so we get 2 of them! Um, well, I'm not QUITE sure what you mean there... you could be describing what's known as a "candlestick" phone or the type that is sometimes called "French," even though it was found all over Europe. Both were actually obsolete by the 1940's, but many were still in use at that time, especially considering the shortages caused by WW II...

There are still a lot of reproductions of those on the market, though I'd recommend browsing online -- most retail stores these days don't stock anything but cordless phones. Originals of that type aren't real easy to get to work on mondern systems, as it's difficult to upgrade the transmitter (the part you talk into) but it can be done if someone is determined.

Probably the most unique phone I have is one that was on the Queen Mary. It's of a later design that the "French" types we've discussed, but it is made of ivory-colored bakelite, which was unusual for the 1930's. It has a label in the middle of the dial blank that reads "YOU CAN TELEPHONE TO ANY PART OF THE WORLD WHILST AT SEA."

I don't know what this type of phone is called, but it's one of the wood box ones, that hang on the wall, with a triangle-like mouth piece you hold to hear out of, while you crank it on the side, and talk into the box. Like the one they show on "Little House On the Prairie." Oh, and it has brass bells on the top I think. Anyhoo, I have always been fascinated by that model, and have never seen one that actually worked. What is this phone called? (I really hope I explained it well enough, so you know what the heck I am talking about!!!!):D Neanderthal question: what did cranking the thing do? Power it or something?

(I really hope I explained it well enough, so you know what the heck I am talking about!!!!):D Neanderthal question: what did cranking the thing do? Power it or something?

Most often, that's called a magneto telephone. It's also sometimes called a local battery telephone. To make a call, you picked up the receiver (the thing hanging on the left side of the box), listened to make sure nobody was already using the line, then hung it back up. You then grabbed the little crank on the right side of the box and gave it about three brisk turns. Then you picked up the receiver again, put it to your ear, and waited for the operator to answer "number, please?" You told her the number you wanted, though in a lot of small towns you could ask for a person or business by name. The thing you talked into on the front of the box is called the transmitter, and it could be adjusted upward or downward to accommodate users of different heights. When you finished your conversation, you hung up and gave the crank a half turn to signal the operator that you were done, and she could take down the connection.

The crank connected to a device inside the box called a magneto, which is another term for "small generator." Turning the crank sent a burst of a/c current down the line that operated a signal on the face of the switchboard, notifying the operator that you wanted to make a call. It also made the bells on all the other phones on the line (party lines) ring, so your neighbors knew you were making a call. The wooden box had to be so large because it needed room for the magneto, as well as two or three very large batteries. The batteries provided the power you needed to actually talk. The magneto was for signalling only. When the batteries ran down, the same thing happened as when you run down the battery of a cell or cordless phone; you couldn't talk. However instead of just plugging in a charger, you had to completely replace the batteries (which actually lasted a lot longer than a cellular battery does).

Most magneto phones were on party lines (more than one house connected to the same line), so incoming calls usually had some kind of coded ring, like one long ring and two short ones, etc. So yes, everyone on your line knew when you were getting a call, and plenty of them listened in, even though they weren't supposed to.

A magneto telephone won't work on a modern line unless you do some rewiring inside. However, if you have two magneto phones, you can connect them together and have a nifty private line between two points.

OK now, I hope SOMEONE is still awake after that explanation!

Thank you, everyone for the kind words.:rose:

Yes, a magneto phone can be rewired to work on a modern line, but you do destroy the originality of the phone in the process. When I do it, I try to leave it so that it can be converted back if anyone ever wants to, but you still destroy a few things in the process. Some are more valuable than others, and a conversion could destroy the value in some cases.
