A former Somerset Area High School science teacher who surrendered his teacher’s license in November is accused of raping a young student.
Somerset Borough police said Stephen W. Shaffer, 55, Poplar Street, Grove City, engaged in a sexual relationship with a female student when she was in eighth grade.
He is charged with rape, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of children, indecent exposure and corruption of minors. Shaffer was a science teacher at Somerset from 1988 until his retirement in 2005.
In early 2001, Shaffer drove the 13-year-old girl to a pump station in the Brierwood housing development, police reported, and he attempted to entice the girl to touch him. She told him her mother was coming to get her and he stopped, police said.
In March, when the girl was 14, Shaffer held the girl down on a couch in his home’s basement and raped her, according to a report.
