What a sick *******. Has anyone else read about this guy? He was the one that murdered those nursing students in Chicago I think in the 60's.

To ward off being murdered in prison, he actually turned into a jail house b**ch, breasts and all.

When I watched his biography special last year, I remember not being too interested in it until they showed the jail tapes at the end of the program. Talk about a waste of a human being if you ask me.

Night of Terror

Judy Dykton decided to get some early morning studying done for a neurology exam. Steamy July weather had forced Judy to run her fan for days. She switched it off and heard a sound like an animal crying outside. Ignoring it, she decided to do some laundry before hitting the books. Downstairs she turned on the washer then headed back upstairs to study. Once more she heard something. This time she thought it sounded like a child crying out. She pulled open the blinds and saw a woman across the street at 2319, perched on a ledge. Judy pushed open the window and heard Cora's tearful cry. "Oh, my God, they are all dead!"

Snatching her robe, Judy ran to 2319. Cora Amurao, crouched on the window ledge, was shaking and crying. Judy entered the open door of the townhouse and stepped into the living room. She found Gloria Davy nude, her hands tied behind her, a strip of cloth knotted so tightly that a roll of skin puffed over the cloth around her neck, her head hanging from the couch, her skin a dusty blue. Murdered.

She fled to the town house of the housemother, Mrs. Bisone, yelling, "There's trouble in 19!"

The housemother woke her other student nurses and ran from the house toward 2319, Leona Bonczak trailing behind.

Cora jumped from the 10-foot ledge and stood on the front stairs, frozen between the horror in the house and the outside world. "Everyone on the sampan has been killed." She kept pleading to everyone not to go in, the killer might still be inside.

Leona and Mrs. Bisone arrived on the scene. Leona touched Gloria Davy on the couch and said. "Davy," as if what she was seeing could not be true and Gloria Davy would moan or stir to give some sign of life. She didn't.

Slowly Leona mounted the stairs and looked down the hall. In the bathroom she found a body. "Matusek!" she said. No answer. Another dead classmate. She crept into the other two bedrooms where she found the rest of the students drenched with so much blood that she was unable to recognize all of them except for Nina Schmale. A pillow covered most of her face, but she could see it was Nina. She lay on her back, hands tied behind her, legs spread for all the world to see, a knife wound in her heart, a tight cloth around her neck.

Cold, numb with the reality that eight of her fellow students were dead, Leona walked downstairs. Mrs. Bisone was waiting. She told her not to go up, that everyone was dead, and there's nothing that can be done.

Mrs. Bisone grabbed the phone, shaking, sick, called South Chicago Community Hospital and told them all her girls had been murdered. When the hospital asked who had been killed, she told them she was unable to tell them, the only thing she said was "I need help." ...

The Richard Speck case: Eight young women die at the hands of a drifter during a night of senseless horror

The hiring hall for merchant seamen on Chicago's Southeast Side was just down the street from a townhouse where nine student nurses lived. On the night of July 13, a drifter who had been looking for work on a Great Lakes freighter broke into their townhouse. His name was Richard Franklin Speck.

Armed with a knife and a revolver, he woke and hogtied the sleeping women and then methodically strangled and stabbed eight of them. The ninth woman was Filipino exchange student Corazon Amurao, who escaped death by hiding under a bed until Speck left.After dawn on July 14, Amurao made her way to a ledge outside a second-floor window. "They are all dead," she screamed. "My friends are all dead. Oh God, I'm the only one alive." Her description of the killer and fingerprints at the scene fueled a massive manhunt for the man responsible for the slaughter.

A 24-year-old high school dropout and drifter, Speck was born in Monmouth, Ill., but spent much of his youth in Texas. By the spring of 1966, he was wanted for questioning in connection with an attempted rape and murder in Monmouth, to which he had returned. He seemed destined to play the part of the fiendish loser, right down to his tattoos: "Born to Raise Hell" on his left forearm, "Love" and "Hate" on his knuckles.

As police scoured the nation, Speck spent the next three days hiding in Chicago flophouses and then slit his wrists. He was taken to Cook County Hospital, where a doctor spotted the tattoos and called authorities.

Speck never denied committing the murders, but claimed he blacked out after a binge of drinking and taking drugs and had no idea what he had done that night. In 1967, he was condemned to death, but the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the sentence. Speck spent the rest of his life in Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet. In a bizarre videotape made years later by fellow prisoners, he was asked why he had killed the young nurses. "It just wasn't their night," he said and then laughed. Speck died in December 1991 after a heart attack.

Wow what a difference between that picture and the video of him having converted to Mrs Bubba. A pretty woman he did not make. :D

It doesn't say there what happened to Corazon (I think her name). I'm just interested to see what the rest of her life was like after surviving that.

Question: why didn't they fight Speck off? There were what, 8 or 9 of them?
I'm thinking it maybe has something to do with the culture that they came from. Now I'm not an expert on Phillipino society but the women, at least then, appear to have been submissive? Is that the right word for this situation? Not sure.

Reading about Speck's crimes and how he ended up, I think I need to go and wash my hands.

Corazon Amurao later got married and worked as a nurse for many years. She has always refused interviews except for a few around the time of his death. She said on Oprah's show, "As long as he was alive, I was afraid. Now that he's dead, I feel I can do it." She wishes to live in privacy, and we must respect that.

Why didn't they fight him off? He had a gun, and they believed him when he said he was just there to rob them, and IMHO that's all he would have done had one of the women not come home from a date - a woman who resembled his ex-wife. This set him off.

Also, I believe several of the women had been drinking - one of them had a BAC that was quite high - and this would have clouded their judgment.

There are a large number of unsolved murders, both men and women, in the Great Lakes region during this time, and the murders stopped around the time he was arrested - 20 or more deaths. I believe he did many, if not all, of them, and was caught simply because he killed eight people at one time.

He was born in the region where I live now; many of his family members still live around there and they have all been respectable, law-abiding citizens who long ago disowned him.

I remember when this happened very well. It was this case that sparked my interest in true crime. After the murders, a lot of people wondered why they didn't fight back. He may have been able to harm a couple of them but the majority would have escaped. It may have been as JB speculated or it could have been that they thought if they just went along with him he would leave them alive. Can you imagine how scared the surviving woman was during all this? She had to be terrified that he would find her. Thinking about this case still makes me shiver. :(

I have read on this crime and found it very disgusting. I think it taught me the difference between mass and serial killers. I think Ted Bundy got the idea for the sorority house he did in FLorida. Anyways what really burns me is that he got hormonal drugs from the State after all of his crimes. I do not have a problem with sex changes but when you have killed brutally so many people you should be locked up in solitary for the rest of your life. :cuss: IMO

How could he smuggle it in? ahhh I guess prision visitation was more lax back in the 80's early 90's? I certainly hope the state wouldn't support something like that but you never know now a days. :(

Hey 12. One question: who would smuggle the stuff into jail for him? He had no family who would have anything to do with him, no friends on the outside so far as I know. But then, I don't know everything. Just don't get who would do it or why.


The same way he gained access to the coke he snorted from his lover's leg in the video I suppose. :shrug:

The survivor had described a tatoo that he had that said "Born To Raise Hell".

When Speck slit his wrists in a skid row hotel a few days later and ended up in the hospital, someone there saw the tatoo and called LE.

Yes; I've heard that about him being drunk/high.

IIRC, he was a Merchant Marine. He'd come to town to sign up for an outgoing ship, but the ship was full, so he hung out and got drunk while waiting for another one. If only there'd been room on that ship, those girls would still be alive.

Did anyone ever see the documentary about this man- it showed footage of him in prison, in a cell with two other men snorting coke and laughing saying if people could see how much of a good time i was having in here, they would let me out!! He also seemed to have taken hormones as he had breasts

The times were much more innocent, which made this even more shocking or at least that's the way I remember it. The newspaper accounts had a diagram of the duplex and the positions of the bodies. I still can't imagine what was going through her mind when she was under the bed. She must have been able to see him coming in to get each girl. It's just really horrible.
