14 months on, have any of you firm ideas what really happened to Madeleine?

1. Planned abduction - chance abduction

2. Parents responsible? Tapas friends responsible?

3. Staying on the fence

Frustratingly, I don't think we will ever have the answers.

I more or less eliminated the parents being responsible from the beginning. I just felt that someone who accidentally kills their child, would be anxious to leave the location of the crime.
In the beginning they were free to go but refused. They kept repeating they would not leave Portugal without Maddie.

Although the McCanns were free to return home. They constantly maintained they will not give the search up. A guilty person would have maintained Maddie fell in the hands of a pedeaphile.

Although I can't say with 100% conviction...I would say she was murdered by a chance abductor.
A 3 year old would not have been abducted for a childless family. They would have chosen one of the twins who is younger.

Either Maddie was OD-ed on some Benedryl-type med to keep her sleeping, and died or she was knocked out by the same meds and abducted by a pedophile.

Remember-the lady in the apartment upstairs had heard Maddie crying the night before...and the twins were so gorked out that when the McCanns had to move to another room, the never woke up-even during the time all the people were parading through the apartment...

With no body to test for any meds, the McCanns were safe either way...nobody can prove they medicated Maddie and possibly killed her.

Had she not been medicated, there's always the possbility that she may have screamed her little lungs out-if she HAD been abducted.

I had hoped for the longest time that she would be found alive, like Steven Staynor, but I doubt that will ever happen now.

I don't even think they'll ever find a corpse.

They made a mistake. A stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. No doubts about that.
But that's all it was.

A 'gimme' for a random paedophile. And they exist. I believe that Maddy is dead but you know what the most horrible scenario would be? If she'd been abducted by someone like that creep from Austria. Then I'd hope, for her sake, that she was dead.

ITA Joseph. I think she was abducted by a paeophile and murdered probably within hours.
I often wondered whether there was a connection between Urls Hans Von Aesch murdering little Ylenia and Madeleine. Von Aesch was in Portugal during the time of Maddies disappearance.

The McCanns were no doubt negligent. Part of going abroad with kids is letting go of routine for a while. When my kids were small they always stayed up on holiday. They ate exactly the same time as me.
I think if you want a routine for small children maybe its not advisable to take them abroad until older

ITA where you are coming from Seashell. Without a doubt they were guilty of neglect.

However, I always felt that if they were guilty they would not be running a "Madeleine is still alive" campaign....too complicated. If they accidentally murdered Maddie it would have been easier to leave Portugal within two or three weeks (the PJ at the time told them they were free to leave) Also it would be easier to say "I believe she was murdered" rather than pursue this belief on Maddie being alive. I would say especially Kate refused to budge. She would not leave Portugal without Madeleine.
They had spoken a few weeks before becoming arguidos they would have to contemplate returning home.

I am not a member of the McCann fan club, but I personally believe she was snatched.

What I find very unbelievable is this random paedophile lurking around a holiday resort, trying out doors abd windows and : lo and behold there is a unlocked door. And what a luck the parents are not in also! A little to much coincidence for me. If she was taken by someone else it has to be someone who was staying on the resort or who worked there and knew there were kids in that appartment and that the parents were out , not someone who wandered in from the streets. But aftre reading the questions Kate refused to answer I'm having second thoughts......

I don't believe this was random either. A pedophile and/or kidnapper is not going to go door to door hoping there might be a kid in one. Someone watched this family and waited until the time was right.

For all we know, maybe they only got Maddie because it was discovered she was gone before they could get the twins. :shrug:

I agree with you because I, too, believe the McCanns were watched and the perpetrator/pedophile waited for the proper moment to snatch beautiful Maddie. Because the McCanns consistently left the children unattended when they dined and socialized in the evenings, the perpetrator likely lurked and moved in just after the children were last checked.

of a case wich happened some time ago in the states. I'm not sure what the name of the child was but she went missing also. Turned out she was taken by a neighbour who kept her body in his closet when the police was searching the premises. I read somewhere that the portugese police searched 10 apartments of the complex. But perhaps she was there all the time....:(

Also this side of the Atlantic we have been inundated with articles, explanations, accusations and so many documentaries.

I watched all the documentaries and more or less reached the same conclusion. The most likely conclusion Maddie was taken.
They were left unsupervised - they took a gamble and lost a child.

I think there had to be a reason Kate refused to answer the questions. I am assuming (don't know this for a fact),her lawyer present advised her not to comment.
Having said that - if I was innocent....I would be livid! I would be so angry! I would answer the questions.

i think of marc dutroux.....seems more likely that she was taken for a portuguese ring imo. I'm a mother of a 8year old myself. It makes me sick thinking what could be done to her. If indeed she is taken maybe she'd be better of dead. But I think she was taken by a "loner" someone who acted by him or herself.

I think we live in a sick world. The McCanns made a wrong decision and Maddie was snatched.
Too many sick people out there. That why you must never leave children of that age unattended.
