View Full Version : Hacker Activity at CL

It seems we have numerous threads going on this subject - most of them titled something like How do I close my acct. Just an FYI - the hacker is still active here - moving my post here from another thread...

It appears the hacker is still actively busy breaking into peoples accounts. If you will look at the "nic" doosmom44 in the current users list on the main index page it shows her as logged in yet on her profile it says - Last activity 10-27-2006, when it should say Last activity Today at such and such a time.

If you've recieved an email from CL saying you attempted to log-in to your acct 5 times etc and it list the following IP then this is the same hacker that took down In Session, Tru TV and Help Find The Missing.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 212.143.129.220 (the last 3 numbers may vary)

dragn_lady

This is the IP they sent me: 212.143.129.233

That IP comes in under the RIPE network. If you query them, it gives you lots more detail. That page for the IP above even gave me a phone number

The IP they sent me was 212.143.129.213.
I'm not trying to make a big deal about this, but its a cracker not a hacker. hackers are people who tinker with computers, crackers crack computers and such...sorry but i had to put that out there...

LOL, not sure I've ever seen that term used before. Thanks for the info. :patriot:

Hacker is still the correct term.

According to dictionary.com:

hacker: a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems.

cracker: a programmer who cracks (gains unauthorized access to) computers, typically to do malicious things; "crackers are often mistakenly called hackers"

The person trying to gain access via our accounts is a hacker...they are TRYING but not succeeding too much. Hence, hacker.

Btw, I just recently got another email informing me of an attempt. The IP this time is: 212.143.129.218

I thought there was a way the admin here could block an IP number? I wonder why that hasn't been done yet considering the fact the IP is the same one (aside from the last 3 numbers) going out to multiple people.

I'm not sure what kind of software runs this board, but at a small board my husband and I run for family and friends to keep in touch, there IS a block IP function. Fairly easy to do.

We COULD just jot down the phone numbers that come up associated with the IPs and call them............collect.

I posted this yesterday on another thread but I feel it bears repeating .
Most importantly run a scan now!!!

Here are some things to think about for everyone was concerned about message boards being hacked!
1. What is to be gained by disrupting the Internet?
2. Who would have a motive to do this?
3. Why attack via message boards?
4. How vulnerable are you personally?
5. What responsibility do you need to take upon yourself to protect your self?

These are my suggestions to my questions.
1. Many people in the World today use the Internet for communication, information, and business transactions. Disruption of our daily commerce and communications would be detrimental to our economy. Interruption of dissemination of information to the public could cause adverse and detrimental repercussions globally. This would leave society in the worst scenario.
2. My opinion is that anyone wanting to divert scrupulous attention from whatever agenda they might have, to a contrived crisis that would take the public into a frenzy of the fear. I would consider this a form of terrorism, a common tactic in the world that we live in today.
3. Computers are running, and unattended for many hours in the day. Most are visited briefly, and many users are not conscious of how many sites they have open. A virus that gets onto a computer is just like a social disease, you do not know when you have it and do not know who you are going give it to until it’s too late. Can you think of a better way to attack your enemy and let them destroy themselves internally?
4. We all know that we need to keep updated on all of our Internet firewalls, virus protection, anti spam and anti fishing programs. This needs to be the first line of defense for our computer security, and the security of our personal information.
5. Run your security updates daily; run them only from a trusted source with which you are familiar. Always run a scan prior to logging on to your computer for the day. Never open a link on an e-mail that your not familiar with, or that your security system advises you not to. Remember that curiosity killed the cat. Do not let the curiosity outweigh your common sense.

Did it sound tricky? LOL I sent the info to DW - maybe mass emails/pm's will do the trick.

O2S: This is the complete range that should be blocked. If you do a search on the IP address listed in the email and google it - there are TONS of boards that have been hacked by the same address just the last 3 digits may be different; but same range. Anyway - FWIW - the complete range:

NetRange: 212.0.0.0 - 212.255.255.255

If this is done chances are it won't go any further. It appears it is in progress.

Thats because there main page is run on Word Press, seems this hacker has a thing for VBulletin, the hack on HFTM is so basic, it only takes two seconds to undo, Had the same thing done to one of my sites two years ago.

Funny thing is VBulletin is considered the Cadillac of message boards, and Pauli stated she had just patched to the last security update released by VBulletin.

Man this does almost make me want to open up a board just to say nah nah na nah nah, you can't hack me! Knock on wood, once I have secured a site up, hackers have never been able to exploit that site again

Apparently the same hacker: the I.P. address was: 212.143.129.204

Also, has anyone else received a "greeting" from someone calling him/herself "Patricia"?? It says something like, "Hi, I'm new here, how's it going?" and includes a quote from Albert Einstein  on Buddhism!

I was curious (and yes, suspicious  ) so I started checking. This "Patricia" has apparently been sending out mass greetings like this to all kinds of websites! "Patricia" also goes by the name(s) "Jesse/Jessie".

You said "results" and "freshwater" are not the same person, but I just looked at suckamore and got the impression that "results" is one of the bosses, along with "fresh". Maybe they're not the same person, but they're partners in the suckamore scam.

It looks as if the site has deteriorated even further. Looks as if poor "fresh" (and his/her assistants) were unable to put together the grandiose thing they promised. (With the "freshwater" personality cult as its guiding philosophy.)

I wonder if the hacking of truTV's boards was REVENGE.

Hi Grneyes, I am one of the refugees from HFTM and IS. (CTV), luckily I had logged on here when everyone thought CTV was shutting down, So you all graciously let us chat about what happened, quite scary. CW from IS and HOH from HFTM seem to know who this hacker is from IP to Isreal addy.
But it is a Panic when you can't find out what happened or talk with anyone about it. So you are proposing a Home away from Home, or emergency shelter board, not funny, but you may have a very good idea.

Cheers :seeya:

Do you know what the significance of 320 is?

Not sure what your question refers to, but 320 Sycamore was the address of the ramshackle house that George and Mary Bailey bought and raised their family in in It's a Wonderful Life.

Always thought 320sycamore.com's theme would be better based on it's a wonderful lie.

I wonder if the donations continue to pour in.

I wonder if the hacking of truTV's boards was REVENGE.Results is one of the mods over there. . . Athena is (was?) too IIRC.

Not sure what your question refers to, but 320 Sycamore was the address of the ramshackle house that George and Mary Bailey bought and raised their family in in It's a Wonderful Life.

Always thought 320sycamore.com's theme would be better based on it's a wonderful lie.

Sure glad I was not snackin'. . . would be cleaning my monitor off!!!
"Wonderful lie" LMAO!!!! :D

And "results" is on the list of the posters here that you offered as evidence that someone else on the list is trustworthy.

----------------

Why did so many fall for "fresh's" lies? What a braggart s/he was/is. S/he claimed technology expertise and boasted about the features this board would have, but then s/he started disabling them immediately.

S/he also bragged about her/his knowledge of crime, the law, etc. A joke, since s/he is barely literate.

Weird how Court TV and now truTV runs such low-tech and poorly moderated message boards. Why so cheap? The problems at insessions could have been dealt with in a few hours. So why is it taking so long? Maybe they don't intend to open the boards again at all.

Hate to see vBulletin get a bad rap, CTV has been the joke of the Internet for years, which is OK. Why ban anyone ever? if they only allow poster to reincarnate themselves with a new hat.

It is not bad software, it is the mods that are running it, why it sucks. Kinda funny for entertainment values though.

You are a regular Mickey mouse to Spill all your expertise and wisdom. It's no wonder you aren't running the place. Heck, you should have your own boards. Oh that's right, you do! Wonder what your members say about you?

No thanks, would not want to be bothered with running a board, not worth wasting bandwidth over, have better things to do with my servers. Jealousy will get you nowheres. Don't hate because you are not knowledgeable.

You register a new nic just to post that Hasta la vista chicken little.

What incredibly rude behaviour considering you've chosen to visit CW's "house".

I really appreciate CW. She keeps the board a nice place to be, IMO. In my experience, people who make up things to slander others are often guilty of what they are accusing the innocent party of.I remember a thread one time that clearly slandered a particular poster. Several of us asked CW to remove it, and she wouldn't do it. She also had her favorites on certain (if not all) forums, and if others disagreed they were banned. Actually, I didn't post at CTV/IS vey often for the reasons I mentioned above.

It's nice that you like and respect her. I don't.

PS Don't click on the link in that email!

ITA! Being a mod can't be an easy job, and there is always more to a situation than most of us see. I've had pals banned over on OC. . . but I must admit, I still think CW is pretty fair.

About the hacking that has been going on. I to got the e-mails with the “F” Bombs. I knew that NO ONE from HelpFindTheMissing had sent it~!!! After all, it did not make ANY SENSE~!!! I did nothing to make anyone mad over there. I deleted them and went to the site to find out what was going on.

For those that can’t remember the date, I looked it up and it was 6-16-08.

I saw I was in good company~!! I went to make my first post there and when I did, I was sent to the same site that everyone that had let the curiosity get the better of them and opened those e-mails.

I think this happened to anyone who tried to change pages at that time. The site was then shut down again for maintenance.

The question that I had that day was that I had also gotten an e-mail from the “National Center for Missing Persons.” I wanted to know if others were getting e-mails for missing persons … was it… just a coincidence… or was I getting too paranoid to open my own e-mails~?

I did open it and it just seemed a normal mass e-mail.

Now, I finally (lucky me~!!) received the same e-mail that everyone else here at CL has gotten (Account on Crime Library Message boards locked out).

I also got another e-mail, on the same day, just a few hours apart, from the National Center for the Missing…The subject line, “MISSING PERSONS and The National Center for Missing Adul…”

Just a little bit too coincidental for me. Do I open it~? :chicken:

I am not the most Internet savvy person and would like to know if anyone has detected any viruses and if so a patch or cure~?

If so, can you please post a link to a website that you would recommend ~?

Thanks so much~!!!

I belong to a reptile forum that uses the Simple Machines software...

http://ciliatus.com/forums/index.php

Maybe this is a change that could get rid of the unwelcome visitor attempts.

http://www.simplemachines.org/

It seems to be a pretty idiot-proof, straight-forward software, and the forums that use it that I belong to seem to be very well-organized.

Thought this might help...:seeya:

I got the locked-out email too... I wonder what good my account would have been to a hacker since I never use it any more and had very few posts to begin with. It's not like having mine would be any more disruptive than if the hacker had just registered a new account of his/her own.

Also, I'm startled to hear that 320 turned out so badly - the last time I was here, it was just starting out and had seemed to be a very promising idea. I'd been under the impression that it was run by the same people as the CL boards... was I wrong about that, or is one or the other under different management these days?

Sorry for the double-post, but I'd like to add that I do see a lot of threads where people talk about that, just none that I can find that have more than just fragments of the story and I'm having trouble piecing them together.

Someone tried to get in as me today and this is the first time I've been here.

Their IP is: 212.143.129.225

All I know is they tried and didn't make it in - anyone we can report it to that would take down the IP addy's and find out who they go to in hopes that they will be caught??I became aware of this problem when I recieved 5 notices of someone trying to access my account.

It was followed by a message that my account was suspended due to to many attempts at accessing my account with the wrong password. I also was given the ip address.

This problem is similar to those of other boards of this nature.

We've experienced some hacking on the Tara forum, and I understand the offending poster has continued to share his disgusting material on other forums. The offensive posts were reported by many posters. I didn't know who the current mods were, so I sent a pm to deepwater. I also will send one to coldwater. Thanks for that info.
