I have been researching the Yosemite killings a lot lately. I go there frequently and find the story of Cary and his brother, Steven, fascinating. I actually passed by San Quentin, the prison that Cary Stayner, Scott Peterson, and Richard Ramirez are at last weekend. I find it very strange/interesting that Scott Peterson and Richard Ramirez both are on penpal websites. However, Cary Stayner seems not to have any information on himself out for the public. Does that seem strange, or is his just wanting to be out of the public eye? Any thoughts on this?

I have no clue. How do you know they have penpal addresses to start with?

kurekaren,
are you in the 'he acted alone camp' or do you think Cary Stayner had an accomplice?

Oh, I'd say he acted alone. He really seemed to be so normal too. I have driven by the Cedar Lodge many times and I do I think about all the horrific things he did and no one knew. Plus, my husband went hiking there one year w/ his brothers. And, they all went to a bar in the town, El Portal, near the area that the murders where committed. One of the waitresses told them that the night that Cary committed the murders; he came to one of the local parties and acted like normal. By the way, to answer the other question on prisoner pen pals-there are tons of sites for prisoners to contact people. One of the many, and the one that Richard Ramirez is on is www.lostvault.com

I have always found the story of Steven Stayner (Cary's brother) so incredibly sad.
And the poor Stayner family--have they been to hell and back or what?? First the years-long ordeal of Steven's abduction (and his tragic, early death), and as if that weren't enough for one family to bear, to learn that their older son Cary is a serial killer! :(
I've always wondered what part Steven's abduction played in Cary's later actions. I read somewhere that Cary stated that he had violent fantasies of murdering women long before his brother was kidnapped...but still I wonder.
What do the rest of you think?

It's been awhile since I've thought aboutthese two cases . . . read quite a bit about both and saw the made for tv movie "back inthe day.":)
What I can remember off the top of my head is that at no time did Cary Stayner ever pass as "normal." Very troubled and dangerous both b4 and after the abduction of his lil brother-can't remember if it was female cousins or neighbors being freaked out by his antics, sorry.
I think he is also the only suspect in the murder of his uncle-right b4 the Yosetime move?
IA with the authorities that Stayner most likely had a lot of victims not traced to him yet - don't reach the level of violence (especially decapitation) on a 1st or 2nd kill.:(

I still wonder about Cary myself. Did he do more than what he admitted too doing? I don't think so, only because he was truthful in his confessions. I believe if he was trying to get attention to pull the spot light off his brother; he would be honest and tell of all his killings, just for the notoriety.
My opinion of course.

Cary Staynor had problems before his brother was abducted.

I think he was born that way. I saw a docu in which his female cousins were interviewed, and they said he was always doing naughty things like trying to peek in the shower while they were in it. They thought he was weird, but never said anything, and they said they regretted not calling attention to his actions at that time. I wish I could find a link to that interview.
OK, I found it. It was on American Justice. Maybe they'll rerun it sometime.
