Andrei Chikatilo - The Rostov Ripper - Citizen X

One of the most interesting cases that I have read on Crimelibrary so far has been the case of Andrei Chikatilo, not because of his life and crimes, but the way (IMO) he was allowed/enabled to keep killing by the Government at the time who were too pigheaded/afraid to:

A. Ask for help from others
B. Even admit there was a serial killer

(The list goes on, but I'm much more interested in others opinions on the case)

Also the incredible persistence from Viktor Burakov (never giving up and paying deary because of it) and of course the first criminal profile ever to be completed by Dr. Bukhanovsky, which gave them some incredible insight into the killer.

This case fascinates me, and I would love to here from others who have a point of view on the subject.

i remember reading this story a long time ago and i watched the documentary, "cannibal," that is referenced in the article. i just now skimmed over it again. he definitely is one of the more depraved. the whole story is disturbing, especially how he would put his semen in a uterus and then chew on it (makes my stomach turn)! i think its sad too that someone was executed for one of the murders (after confessing while being tortured) that chikatilo had done. i guess the russian justice system had some kinks to work out, to say the least.

Years ago i saw a documentry about chikatilo called "citizen X". It was extremly well done. One of the impressions it left was how the cold war effected this case in a major way. The Russian goverment's official position (at the time) on serial killers was that they were an "American phenomenon". Something that could never happen in the U.S.S.R. This pig headed stance cost many lives.

Viktor Burakov was a brilliant man (IMO). He realized that chikatilo was picking up his impoverished victims at train stations and began surveillance. If not for that stroke of genius, God only knows how many more children would have been butchered.

I believe i saw the movie "citizen X" on showtime (in the mid 90's). It is an excellent documentry.

Tangerine, thanks your so right had a lot of kinks to work out!!! I have seen the Movie Citizen X which was brilliant, very sad, but as Movies go they generally have a little spice added, so probably not 100% accurate, I would like to see the documentary Cannibal, any idea where I could lay my hands on it??

Didn't you think it was interesting actually looking at the man??, sure he looked crazy but you pass 10 of him in the street everyday, I guess this really proves that Serial Killers are really just average looking people.

actually, i think he didnt really start looking crazy until the end, especially when he was in the cage. in the one pic in the CL story thats marked "school photo," he looks pretty normal. and yes, i think we do pass alot of ppl like him on the streets everyday. how scary is that? i'm not sure where to find "cannibal." i think i remember it was made by a film student. one of the more interesting cases in that doc was of an asian man who had been an exchange student in england. he became obsessed with a co-ed. he ended up killing her and consuming parts of her. of course, he was arrested but declared insane. since the british gov didnt want to pay for his treatment in a hospital, they deported him back to japan where in a few months (or years??) he was declared recovered and released. so this killer/cannibal is now walking around free as a bird. and you wont believe this....he's a porn star. it's so sensational that its unbelievable. i would def recommend watching it.

I have read about the bloke your talking about his name is Issei Sagawa, he was sent back to Japan as you say and because his father is a man of Power over there, paid the Japanese Government to release him after he returned. He admits still to feeling the urge to kill white women and consume their flesh and dates white women all the time!! It’s terrifying that someone that openly admits all of this, is as you say free as a bird!! Very frightening. I didn't know he was a porn star, how ridiculous!!!! I know he's an artist, I think he even has a website where he sells his filth!!

Issei Sagawa a porn star?? OMG!!! I had read how he was a "celebrity" now and appeared on talk shows and the like. There aren't many convicted cannibals walking free, he is probably the only one. He hasn't repeated his crime (as far as anyone knows) since 1981, so maybe he is reformed, LOL!!! Apparently he still has fantasies about cannabalism but never wants to relive them and it appears he has not.

As for Chikatilo, he was a sick and sorry child murderer and mutilator. He is up there with Gary Ridgeway as far as numbers go. I think his being a member of the Communist Party helped him get away with killing for so long. I haven't seen the Citizen X movie, but have seen Cannibal and Evillenko (based on Chikatilo) and they were both pretty bad, especially Evillenko.

Now that is an unattractive thought ha ha ha, even more scary then a killer who prefers there meat rare YUK!!!! I still haven't found that doc!!! Will have to keep looking!!

Taking in cosideration the protocols taken by russian law enforcement during Chikatilo's killing spree, do you really think they found all the bodies? I mean he could have killed twice the number or even more and no one could have ever found out. And because of the opinion most russian high ups had at the time about profiling not everything can be detailed about him. That's the thing about alot of serial killers, you never know what they are and exactly how much they were/are capable of.
