I have followed this case from the moment i heard about a missing woman from Modesto before Christmas.

I know this has been discussed a lot but it still amazes me that both her name and DRISP are household names. Why Laci? What made her so special to you??

I know for me I was pregnant at the time and was due the same month as Laci her case became almost an obsession with me.

I came across this statement and I think it explains what I am trying to say.
I know it is a harsh statement....

When Peterson's rotting corpse was first found, comedian Bill Maher cracked on HBO, "Laci Peterson's body was discovered this week. I've heard of breaking up with someone before Christmas so you don't have to buy a present, but that's harsh." When the audience didn't laugh, Maher asked, "Oh, I can attack the president, the economy, the war, but don't mess with Laci Peterson?"

Why do we all keep this spot for Laci in our hearts, like we knew her?
And why not others??

My answer to Bill Maher's question:
Laci Peterson was a very vulnerable human being who was murdered by her intimate partner.
I see no comparison between a murder victim and "the economy, the president or the war." Murder/violence/victimization/crime just isn't funny, IMO.
My answer to you: I don't "keep Laci in my heart like I know and love her. " I empathize greatly with those who did know and love her, and cannot fully imagine the depth of their grief. I truly enjoyed reading "For Laci", and the parts of Bird's book that described Laci ( and listened intently to some of the comments from loved ones at her memorial service).
They shared their memories of her with us, she was precious to them, I was glad for an opportunity to "know" more about the vibrant, loving, lovable Laci.
To this day, when I hear a few songs (such as "Brown-Eyed Girl") or see pictures ( especially of little girl Laci,) I will once again feel deeply for a bit, but I do feel this about other victims in cases I have followed.
I care a great deal about pregnant women/couples/children/families. I personally believe premeditated intimate/familial homicide is the most evil of all and deserving of the highest punishment. People who coldly kill their own spouse or child(ren) violate and betray society at the deepest core of our shared humanity, IMO.
Scott Peterson is empty, callous, cruel and devoid of the ability to connect to fellow human beings, IMO.
I'm glad there was justice for Laci & Conner, and Scott is sitting exactly where he belongs. IMO.

The media claimed it was because it was a slow news time and the timing of her disappearance to the holidays.

I think Sharon's dignity and openness of her pain that got to me. I had a daughter about Laci's age who had grown up in Modesto. I had been a substitute teacher, although not where Laci was. My nephew was at Cal Poly the same time Laci was. There were many connections on my part. The community support was amazing to me. I had liked Modesto when we lived there. It was a good community in which to raise children. I still have friends who live there and who participated in the searches and put up flyers. Laci's disappearance touched the community in many ways.

I've asked myself that question more times than I can count. I still don't have a firm answer. Maybe it was her smile and that she looked like someone I would have been friends with. Maybe it was that they looked like the all-American couple and it seemed so impossible that he could have murdered her. Maybe it was simply that she was pregnant and it was Christmastime -- nothing that bad should happen at Christmas, right? The answer is probably all of the above and more.

I've been lurking on the Stacy/Drew Peterson threads. This has the potential of coming close to being the next big one I'll follow. I don't know if I'll feel the same emotional attachment that I felt toward Laci. Somehow I doubt it. Bill Maher's audience was right -- you can make jokes about OJ, Phil Specter, Anna Nicole or just about any other mysterious death. Don't mess with Laci.
