Reading that, I'm thinking that they must have only seen 'still photo's' taken from the tape, i.e. not the actual video tape.

Forgot the 2nd most intriguing piece of info from the show last night ...

at same time frame as "yeast infection" mom found 3 year old with an unexplained bandage on her arm. No explanation as to mom's reaction (other than obvious disregard in some way or form) but they did speculate on air that this may have been caused from Stiles holding her down while forceably raping her. :mad:

It was very informative and I expect articles including the above info will be found shortly! I hope the investigation continues at the same pace to uncover EVERYONE involved . . . whoever that might be!

At first we heard she wasn't aware of anything wrong, most recently the mom's admitted she remembers seeing something but thought it was a yeast infection. I've been trying to come up with a fact pattern that could explain the mother's "lack of knowledge" in a way that could be explained. It's hard to come up with one, so I'm gonna post one possible scenario.

We can assume the mother of Madison was a single mother (no one else has considered the father's inability to notice the abuse - suggesting he was not around to be in the position to notice).

What if she really is working her hardest to bring in an income for her daughter (as her attorney suggests, 6 days a week)

What if she moves in with Stiles' girlfriend Allen, because that's the only roof she can put over their head in her price range?

What if she has no idea that Stiles will be there, and no time to review his background had she become aware? Let's say she's not met him . . .

What if she leaves Madison with her roommate, this Allen girl?

What if she comes home late at night, or at least at the end of an 8 hour + day, and asks for updates on how Madison did in her absence?

What if the Allen girl plants in the mother's head the yeast infection? If the Allen roommate gave the mother a run down of the day - saying that Mason was fine but really irritable and rubbing her crotch and demonstrating signs consistent with a yeast infection in a girl that age - and that she changed her diaper and saw signs of a yeast infection?

What if, based upon the huge leap in Allen's supporting the infection & actively covering for Stiles, the mother believes the bleeding in her daughter as solely from an infection?

What if the mother is told that the bruising on the girl's arm is from falling down while roughhousing at Allen's?

I think if the Allen girlfriend were actively involved in covering up for Stiles in some way or form, AND she were the babysitter at the time (we can presume that as well, given that the rape happened in her house and in her bed), then we might have a scenario where the mom didn't have suspicions.

I think the best scenario for the mom hinges on what the Allen girl told her following her babysitting of Mason.

I don't think that's toooo far fetched, given that this Allen girl's son told reporters that he didn't like Stiles for many reasons, one of them being that he was accused of improperly touching a young girl, and that his mother defended Stiles and claimed he was being falsely accused and the other young girl in that case was lying. If she's the kind of character to stay with a guy who abuses her (given her a black eye in 2004) then she's the kind of character to justify his actions. If she justifies her own black eye, then why not the actions involving or allegedly involving other kids???

Just my thoughts . . .

I still find mom's inactions in this case very puzzling and troublesome.

Anyone come up with another possibility?

It's in the girl's best interests that the mother truly be innocent here, though I think at best she's negligently turned a blind eye towards the truth.

Exactly! Who was holding the video camera while Stiles was being taped? Detectives should be able to tell whether or not the video camera was being hand held or on a tripod. Usually if its hand held the picture will appear shakey (unstable) not sure what term to use here.

I can see a tired hard working single Mum, living in poverty, maybe waiting to see if it will clear on its own. Doctors are expensive, and maybe she thought to wait to see if the infection resolved...(and it would have appeared to improve on its own).

I think if the daughter was drugged, she would not have remembered anything to tell. Any unusual behaviour could be blamed on being unsettled, terrible twos (or threes), the crowded living conditions etc.

In the olden days it was common practice to make your kids politely greet your adult friends and give all a kiss....everyone was an uncle!!!!

I totally agree - that woman is using this tragedy now for her own personal kick by exploiting her role as much as possible - injecting herself in a tragedy to get media coverage. While doing that, though, she ignores the obvious involvement she had . . .

I must say I agree with Wind, I am so tired of mom's that turn a blind eye or forgive the man who does horrible things to the wife/girlfriend and children as well as pets. I too worked in LE and saw time and time again where the revolving door happened. We would be called out on a DV and next thing you knew she was *****ing because she could not get the restraining order lifted fast enough. The kids are the one's that suffer. For Sure....I could tell story after story and yes it pisses me off.

I actually pushed away a best friend as she too is one of these types and I could not watch it anymore, I told her to call me when one of the kids gets killed, thought that comment might knock some sense into her, nope. That is a great link - and so true that when we have children it brings up those old feelings in us and emotionally we can revert to that age - it is a ways to a healing.

I am terribly afraid of that for her. If this mother has any kind of heart she would seek counseling now, and maybe there will be a chance she can start to help heal Madison instead of repressing it for a later date.

WNC - I think you are great - but are you saying? That she couldn't forget that - she couldn't repress it? You think she will just remember one day - it took miss america how long to uncover these memories? There are plenty of women who go to their graves never knowing what caused their problems in life, sexual dysfunction, lack of trust. I probably never would have known myself if it hadn't happened to my daughter.

Well yes - I have to agree - that occured to me last night. I'm sure they would not show her face though. I just wouldn't be surprised if it happened. I'll bet you everything I have that he has approached them. He did a story about a girl who was molested by her grandfather and never showed the girl's face - no audience and everyone had their appearances altered. I thought he did a very good job on that.

What's most important is that she has support, intelligent support. And to make this event something that happened in the past. She is going to need to learn how to not let this define who she is.

It's way too early for this girl's story to be told on TV or anywhere else. I doubt that the situation has been fully investigated and her recovery has barely begun. For her (and her possibly) negligent mother to appear on TV would be nothing short of exploitative. My fear is that many will capitalize on this and profit from it. After all I have read, I was thinking of something that I thought may have happened. Since Madison's mother had a roommate(Allen) with a boyfriend(Stiles), maybe she got to know him and began to trust him. Then maybe, just maybe, she trusted him enough that one day, when she didn't have a babysitter, she left her little girl with him. Maybe that's why she "doesn't remember" who the babysitter was. If he was there a lot, the little girl and her mother both probably were used to him being around. Maybe he talked her into leaving the little girl with him that day since Madison was familiar with him. Then when she came home, she found the little girl had been abused and she didn't want to tell because she feared she would be in trouble for leaving her with him. I can't get past the fact that somehow the child WAS left with him alone. JMO!!

You are absolutely right to hire an attorney for the protection of the daughter. I cannot believe a grown man can rape a child and the mother not take the child to a Doctor if she found bruises and bleeding around her genitals! Or not notice at all!

It's very hard - I don't understand this mother but I also know that if they are living a normal life now that it may be even more traumatizing to Madison to lose her mother at this point. I know - I hate to judge unfairly - but I just can't come up with a scenario - (knowing that autorities have said RAPE, and she was only three) that there were no major signs to alert this mother.

I just want Madison to be OK - it's hard to know what road to take & it's hard that we all know her story now and are concerned for her but may never know her outcome.

I too can't wait for stiles (I refuse to capitize his name!) to be captured. And I want them to throw him in with the regular prison population so that he can get raped - how unChristian of me - oh well!

am sorry but i dont agree, the child was supposedly living a "normal" life and seems her mum has let her down by her negligence and i feel the child is better off away from the mother, the baby cant be worse off as it is the way this whole awfull episode has evolved the rape and torture wasnt visible? cmon mums are supposed to notice these thing!!

I am so afraid that this whole incident is going to be forgotten and he will slip away into the night to wreak havoc on another small child's life. I check all the websites every hour on the hour and do searches for his name and there is no new news of him anywhere. The last I heard was some homeless people in a Las Vegas homeless shelter thought they saw him and when he realized this, he ran away. Has he become friends with Osama Bin Laden and they are hiding out together having a beer, why can't we find him??? I do not think that all is forgotten for this child. When she has her own kids, when she has had a little too much to drink and is sitting alone with her own thoughts, when she reaches adulthood and hears a story of another child, she will remember and all of those dirty feelings and questions of "why me" will come flooding back. I guess I just want to see him dragged throught the streets by his ying yang, sentenced publicly and thrown into the public prison yard to be tormented repeatedly, every hour on the hour until he expires.

Altho I knew almost immediately when my daughter had been abused (only once) she was very verbal about letting me know she had symptoms. The first thing out of her mouth was, "mommy it hurts to go potty". She was 3 years old! At frist I thought she might have a Urinary tract infection and took her to the doctor immediately. They couldn't find any signs of an infection, nor did they tell me they thought she had been raped. There were other signs/evidence that told me otherwise. It wasn't until a few days later that I put it all together, it was her 11 year old cousin who raped her. It happened at night while everyone was asleep. We were told after the fact that this cousin was known to molest his own sister! Why my in-laws would allow my two daughters to sleep in the same room with this pervert is beyond me.
We've never had contact with that side of the family again. I think back on it and could kick myself for being part of sweeping this under the rug so to speak. Thank you so much for that - you don't know the guilt I felt, and then relived when she had to be examined by the doctor. She was VERY young and finally became verbal about it when she was 2 1/2 - It didn't just come out so easy though - she never said it hurt just didn't like being washed down there. She just told me a story about "grandpa's snake" Then she didn't want to talk about it. I actually thought I was CRAZY to even suspect sexual abuse.I called a child abuse hotline and got some tips on how to sit with her in a non-threatening manner and talked to her about it. It finally came out and I was stunned!

Not at all! :rose: I admire your passion. I don't know if my child was ever actually raped the way Madison was described to have been. There was only so much I could get out of my then 2 1/2 year old. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the mother. But this has got to be turning Madison's world upside down. When she has her own kids, when she has had a little too much to drink and is sitting alone with her own thoughts, when she reaches adulthood and hears a story of another child, she will remember and all of those dirty feelings and questions of "why me" will come flooding back. I guess I just want to see him dragged throught the streets by his ying yang, sentenced publicly and thrown into the public prison yard to be tormented repeatedly, every hour on the hour until he expires.
Truer words have not been spoken, this sentence alone makes me sad and makes me realize this is when it will haunt her the most. Because this is when it haunts me. I have been there. And there is nothing more in this world that I want, than all the little innocents to be safe. They can't even trust an adult anymore, without the chance of being raped, molested, kidnapped and worse..... murdered. I am 23 and I am TERRIFIED, beyond belief to bring a child into this world.

I've known plenty of mothers in my day who aren't connected to their child because they're pre-occupied with other things in their lives. Jobs, social life, etc. This sounds like the case of Madison's mother, who says she had to work 2 jobs to stay afloat. Single mom with child trying to make it on her own - thats a difficult thing to go through if you don't have a family support system of some sort. IMO, JMO

You know I don't want to sound rude, but yes I do think people jump to conclusions more so on message boards than in real life IMO. I don't know what it is about message boards and jumping the blame game, but I've learned over the years not to go there. Some very wise words someone told me once and I"m certain many of you have heard them too--

"Put yourselves in their shoes" I can't even imagine myself in most peoples shoes when I read about their cases here on a daily basis. I'm not even sure I could post here if I were dealing with the loss of a child or family member in a violent manner.
Just something we should all think about when we get our panties in wad how a parent/caregiver/significant other handled a particular situation. IMO, JMO.

Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles was arrested after a traffic stop Monday in Henderson, Nev. He's accused of raping a 3-year-old girl on videotape in 2003. "I'm tired of running," he said, according to police.



Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles, 37, was pulled over late Monday in Henderson, Nevada, for not having a license plate. He admitted his identity after police said his license looked suspicious.

"He said, 'I'm Chester Stiles, the guy you're looking for,"' Henderson police Officer Mike Dye said. "He said, 'I'm tired of running."'

Las Vegas police Capt. Vincent Cannito said Stiles has been wanted since Oct. 5 on warrants issued for 21 felony charges in connection with the acts seen on the videotape. The charges include lewdness with a minor, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault.

The videotape, found in the rural Nevada town of Pahrump last month, had prompted an equally intense search for the young girl who appeared in it. Police with little to go on had encouraged news organizations to broadcast the haunting image of the 3-year-old. When the now-7-year-old was found on Sept. 28, authorities shifted their resources to finding Stiles.

Dye said he stopped Stiles' vehicle - a white sedan with no license plates - on Monday evening on a busy thoroughfare just outside Las Vegas.

Stiles, who had been portrayed by authorities as a dangerous, knife-wielding survivalist, provided an expired California drivers license with a photo that Dye said looked "suspicious."

"The picture on the license didn't quite match the gentleman in the vehicle," Dye said.

After further questioning, the officer said Stiles revealed his true name. Dye said Stiles cooperated and did not resist. Dye called for backup, and another officer arrived to handcuff Stiles. HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a God!! I am so thankful to the Henderson police dept for catching this maggot and I hope he never sees freedom again. He might as well plead guilty because they have his sorry ass right on the tape raping her and no defense attorney in the land is gonna be able to dispute that! And a jury is gonna sit there in horror watching that poor baby get violated and will find him guilty in 3 minutes flat! I would like to see the focus taken away from this child and her family and more news about this monster.

I think they need to just fade into oblivion and be left alone. I'm glad that the child has no memory. But if they are hounded by the media, then maybe a memory will surface, so leave them alone.

Well yes - I have to agree - that occured to me last night. I'm sure they would not show her face though. I just wouldn't be surprised if it happened. I'll bet you everything I have that he has approached them. He did a story about a girl who was molested by her grandfather and never showed the girl's face - no audience and everyone had their appearances altered. I thought he did a very good job on that.

What's most important is that she has support, intelligent support. And to make this event something that happened in the past. She is going to need to learn how to not let this define who she is.

I just KNEW Dr. Phil would approach them - I have alot of respect for him. I think he's smart and knows how to cut through the bull - I'll say it again, I hope he CAN help them (with resources $ etc). They don't even need to actually be on the show, I'm sure he'd help them privately. The other good thing here is that we all care about Madison and we want to know she's has a chance. We have grieved along with the rest of the world over this one child and she has become ours in a way. I think we all want some closure here. It has obviously hit us at our core.

Anyhoo, I figured I'd make my first post here since the case actually hits pretty close to home for me. As it turns out, I actually met the little girl from the video in question. It was just this past spring at a friend's wedding. I met her mom too. They seem to be pretty normal well adjusted people. The only thing that caught my attention about the little girl was that she liked to put the olives on her fingertips and giggle. You'd never guess looking at her that something like that had happened. She's such a sweet kid. I just don't get how anyone can do something like that.

Anyway I've heard the story from the girl's mom and that creep's ex girlfriend about what went on that day (not directly, there was one person between). I was a little suspicious myself as to why the hell her mom didn't notice anything the day it happened. The thing is, I don't know the details about what happened on the tape, and don't have an idea of what her nether regions looked like that day. I don't know if he did anything that would leave an obvious physical mark or not. 99.9999999% of the world doesn't know what kind of twisted **** is on the tape. So, based on that, I try to give the benefit of the doubt, but in the end, like most people, there's always that lingering suspicion in the back of my mind.

I'm glad he's caught. I hope the son of a ***** rots. Nasty Nate will be waiting for him.

Yeah - I think that it has been determined that he videotaped it himself. But it seems that she was in his girlfriend's care when the attack took place. The girlfriend had to have been sleeping, on drugs, or just out, leaving him with this guy who had already been accused of lewd acts and/or molestation

Tina says Stiles punched her in the face in 2004, cracking her jaw. She says she didn't file a police report because she was scared of him. Stiles is wanted on state and federal warrants stemming from lewd behavior with a child under 14.

It's ok. Different people see things differently for different reasons. If we all had the same outlook on every issue, the world would be a boring place and nothing would ever change.
Also, like I said before, the media will report what gives them the best ratings, which doesn't always coincide with the truth, but at the same time the people I've talked to will always give their side of the story which also doesn't always coincide with the truth. I take everything I hear from both the media and the people involved with a grain of salt.

Listen, I agree. There is nothing I distrust more than the media! I reacted to the words of her own son and nothing the media has said. I apologize for being a little nasty - My experience with a bad babysitter will forever burn inside me - I didn't mean for that to cross over to you - I commend you for your open heart and I am glad to also hear that you will take even the word of the participants with a grain of salt or at least be aware that they are more than likely witholding other info.

I hear ya. I've got a 3 year old (soon to be 4) myself. If anything like that ever happened to her I would lose my mind. I would only kill them if I was 110% positive I would get away with it though. I wouldn't do my baby any good in jail.

Hi I'm new..I've been reading this since I found it on crimelibrary it just broke my heart that face of that little girl just killed me...but I've been catching up on your post with new news coverage..I did know they caught him and that she was ok I'm happy she will never remeber what happened to her and its sad to know her mother will live this for the rest of her life...but the good thing is the scumbag is in jail and he WILL get what he deserves and he will once hes let loose...this story really took to heart I have a 1yr old and if anyone ever hurt her I would kill them I would sit in jail..

I hear ya. I've got a 3 year old (soon to be 4) myself. If anything like that ever happened to her I would lose my mind. I would only kill them if I was 110% positive I would get away with it though. I wouldn't do my baby any good in jail.

I have small granddaughters 3 & 1. I would kill someone who hurt my babies. I think someone who hurts a baby should get death. I feel like if they give them life in prison first time offense, they would not be able to hurt another child. I agree that she will remember someday. When I was a little girl my aunts husband molested me. I repressed it, and never told anyone. Years later he raped his own daughter. He died a slow painful death of prostate cancer, God gave him his sentence.You are right about hell hath no fury like an angry woman! And a angry grandma!!!

It's so hard to know that she may well remember and have to go through the pain of uncovering memories but in my experience the consequences on one's soul/spirit/psyche with those memories sealed are worse then with them unsealed. I have heard she seems like a happy normal child. So do many children with repressed memories, but as they grow into women they are scarred and often don't understand why they have the issues they do. I'm just saying - maybe she won't have to remember - since it is now public knowledge, maybe she will have the help she needs to be able to deal with whatever issues come up for her. And if the memories do come through, which they probably will, hopefully she will be able to cope with them. I understand therapy and support has been offered to her. I hope the mother will take it and continue to get her all the support she needs.

I hope the mother does too..the thing I don't understand is how the mother never noticed something wrong with her daughter..god with my daughter I know if something is wrong from her cutting a tooth to having a cold..I just understand that part of it...what I'm trying to say is a mother knows there child more then anybody..

Raven, I most certainly agree that I always knew where my son was and what he was doing and feeling. He was my number one priority. (I say was because he is grown with his own family now) Of course just from reading the news nowadays it is pretty disgusting that some people are even allowed to have babies. Sad Sad Sad.

The same here my daughter is my number 1 priority...it is sad so many bad things happening to the little ones anymore...theres just so many weak minded people its sad because they can't take on someone there own size because they know they'll have there ass handed to them..

Nevada Hells Angels president & brothel owner convicted for child porn

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) David Burgess, a Nevada brothel owner and Hells Angels president was found guilty Friday of possessing and transporting child pornography.

Jurors deliberated less than four hours after closing arguments in the weeklong federal trial of Burgess, a charter member of a Nevada chapter of the Hells Angels and owner of the Old Bridge Ranch, a legal brothel near Reno, Nev.

Burgess, 55, had pleaded not guilty to the two charges. When the verdict was read, he looked solemnly back at his friends and family members in the courtroom, many of them weeping. Burgess' bond was revoked, and he was handcuffed and taken into custody by U.S. marshals.

Burgess faces from five to 30 years in prison, up to a $500,000 fine, and from five years to life of supervision after his release.

Friends and family members testified during the trial that Burgess was a proficient digital photographer, always snapping photos on motorcycle runs or of his neighbor's garden.

But prosecutors said investigators found more sinister images on two hard drives that were seized from the ****'s motor home last July during a traffic stop in western Wyoming. The hard drives contained a vast collection of child pornography images, well-organized and carefully labeled, prosecutors said.

James Barrett, the assistant federal public defender representing Burgess, said the convictions will be appealed.

"I think Mr. Burgess was disappointed, and it's obvious that his family and friends and supporters were disappointed," Barrett said outside the courtroom.

Barrett said the appeal will be at least partly based on U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson's ruling last week to allow evidence taken from the computer equipment to be used in the trial. Burgess had attempted to suppress any evidence taken from the hard drives, arguing that the equipment was beyond the scope of a search warrant obtained by Wyoming police.

Johnson ruled that the officers had probable cause to take the equipment and that investigators acted properly in the way they handled the case.

Burgess told police he was on his way to the 2007 Hells Angels USA Run in Eureka Springs, Ark., when he was stopped in western Wyoming in July because of an expired license plate. During the stop, Burgess was arrested on drug charges when officers found substances believed to be marijuana and cocaine in the vehicle, police said. State drug charges stemming from the traffic stop were later dismissed.

Officers have testified that they confiscated the computer equipment from Burgess' Freightliner motor home because they believed it could contain evidence related to drug trafficking.

"We know this item contains not only tens of thousands of images child pornography, it also contains thousands of documents related to the defendant, David Burgess," Assistant U.S. Attorney James Anderson said as he held up the hard drive during closing arguments.

I highly doubt it. Granted there are groups who've done some horrible things but I don't see everything being related to the Hells Angels.

The man accused of sexually abusing a toddler and videotaping it is scheduled for trial today.

It's been more than a year-and-a-half since 38-year-old Chester Stiles first made headlines. He is facing multiple life sentences for more than 20 felony charges which include sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14.

Stiles was arrested after a national manhunt to find him. The alleged crimes came to light when a videotape was found in the desert near Pahrump and given to police in September 2007.

Police say the videotape showed Stiles having sex with a two-year-old girl. Stiles was arrested in Henderson two weeks later during a traffic stop.

Stiles' trial has been delayed a few times and he has tried to strike a plea deal, but the District Attorneys office wants to take the case to trial due to the severity of charges.

LAS VEGAS, NV -- After months of delays, the trial of accused child molester Chester Stiles is finally underway. Stiles is accused of sexually assaulting a toddler and videotaping it. The case grabbed the nation's attention and set off a national manhunt.

It's been nearly a year and half since a videotape surfaced in Pahrump, and the 12 jurors and three alternates who are seated for the jury may have to watch it.

"Is there anyone who has such a sympathy, prejudice or bias related to these things, age, religion, race, gender or national origin, that they feel will affect their ability to be fair and impartial jurors," asked Judge Jennifer Togliatti.


Not only were potential jurors asked a series of questions, they got a chance to see Chester Stiles face to face. In a questionnaire, many in the jury pool said they were familiar with the Stiles case because of all media reports.

A nationwide manhunt took place for Stiles after a videotape surfaced of him allegedly sexually assaulting a toddler. That tape is evidence and is expected to be shown inside the courtroom.

"There's other evidence in the case, obviously, that is going to be presented beside that videotape. What this question is getting to is whether you can consider that tape as well as that other evidence objectively," said Chief Deputy District Attorney James Sweetin.


In a questionnaire that was filled out, several of the jurors stated that they would not be able to stay impartial after watching that video evidence, some calling child molesters the lowest of the low.

In total, Stiles is facing 22 counts, including lewdness with a minor and sexual assault of a minor. There is more than one victim in this case -- a six-year-old girl was also allegedly sexually assaulted by Stiles back in 2003. She is also part of this trial.

Jury selection is expected to take a few more days.

Opening Statements Begin in Stiles' Trial

Opening statements were heard Monday in the trial of Chester Stiles who is accused of sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl and videotaping everything.

"Ladies and gentleman the hardest part of this case will have to listening to a young child describing sexual abuse and to view a videotape of sexual abuse of an even younger child but in so doing you will have absolutely no doubt of the defendant's guilt," said Mary Kay Holthus, prosecutor.

Stiles is facing 22 felony charges, including 21 carrying life sentences. Stiles is also accused of molesting a 6-year-old girl, who is now 11 years old. She was the first witness to take the stand after the opening statements. She no longer resides in Las Vegas. The girl's mother also took the stand and said her daughter seem very scared of Stiles the day after the alleged assault.

Stiles spent the night at the alleged victim's home because he was dating a family friend who was staying in the home. Stiles was only in the home for one night.

The toddler, who was also allegedly assaulted by Stiles, has told authorities that she has no memory of anything happening.

The case gained nationwide attention after the videotape surfaced after being discovered in the desert in Pahrump and a nationwide manhunt was initiated for Chester Stiles.



The videotape will be shown during the trial. It is the main piece of evidence. The defense tried multiple times to have the tape thrown out as evidence.

Stiles arrived in court on Monday in a suit jacket and yellow shirt. His attorney, Amy Coffee, asked jurors to keep an open mind.

"We are asking you to keep an open mind until you have seen and heard all of the evidence in this case and when you go back to deliberate you will see that the state has not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Stiles is guilty of any of the 22 charges," Coffee told the jurors.

LAS VEGAS — The trial of a man charged in the videotaped sexual assault of a 2-year-old girl opened Monday with a prosecutor reading a letter in which the defendant told an ex-girlfriend, "I am a monster."

That letter and one other from Chester Arthur Stiles was found in a glass bottle buried in the desert. Prosecutor Mary Kay Holthus used the writings to former girlfriends to cast the Las Vegas man as full of self-loathing and wracked by guilt about his own abuse as a child and his attraction to the "purity and virtue" of prepubescent girls.

"'Somehow being abused has made my conscience a smaller voice than it should have been,"' Holthus said, quoting from one of the letters.

A VHS tape of the assault was given to Nye County sheriff's investigators in September 2007 by a man who said he found it five months earlier wrapped in a plastic bag beneath a piece of wood in a desert lot about 60 miles west of Las Vegas. That man, Darrin Tuck, later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct a public officer for the delay in turning in the video.

Stiles was arrested in Henderson in October 2007 after a nationwide search in which authorities distributed photo images from the videotape of the younger girl and a man's face to help find the child and her assailant.

Stiles' lawyer, Amy Coffee, told the Clark County District Court jury that despite the videotape, the letters and jail telephone recordings, prosecutors won't be able to prove the 22 felony charges against Stiles, who also is accused of molesting a 6-year-old girl. Twenty-one of the 22 charges carry sentences of life in prison.

Coffee took just four minutes to explain that the defense will challenge the authenticity of the videotape showing sexual contact with the 2-year-old in 2003, and will focus on inconsistencies in various accounts by the 6-year-old.

"In each interview, a different story was told, including at one point that nothing at all happened," the defense lawyer said.

Moments later, the courtroom hushed as the older girl, now an 11-year-old fifth-grader living in Washington state, pointed from the witness stand at the man she referred to as "Cheddars" and "Chowder" but not Chester.

"He touched me inappropriately," she said in a voice so soft and high the judge had to ask her to scoot closer to the microphone so she could be heard.

She recounted how Stiles kissed her on the mouth and reached under her clothing when they were alone in her bedroom. Prosecutors allege the molestation happened when Stiles and a girlfriend stayed the night at the girl's family's home in December 2003.

Holthus coaxed the girl to describe where and how she was touched.

"Between my legs," the girl replied.

Stiles, 38, of Las Vegas, sat stonefaced, occasionally passing a written note to his lawyers as the girl testified.

He has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of sexual assault with a minor under 14 years of age, 10 counts of lewdness with a child under 14, and one charge of attempted sexual assault with a minor under 14.

Nineteen charges stem from acts shown on the video, which prosecutors plan to show the jury. Police said Stiles can be seen adjusting the camera as he molests the child.

Holthus and prosecutor Jim Sweetin have said they don't plan to call the younger girl to testify. A lawyer for the girl's mother said the child, now 8, doesn't remember being assaulted.

The letters Holthus read were found in the desert outside Las Vegas, in a glass bottle that also contained the title to Stiles' car and his photo. Stiles disclosed the location of the bottle to police after his arrest.

"'I'm a monster and what I've done there's no making up for,"' Holthus read from the letter. "'I'm very sorry for the girls I've abused. I wish I could take it back."'

The letter continues with Stiles asserting that he "'didn't rape or penetrate anyone."'
