OK. But I need some help. I'm registered Democrat. We have open primaries in Louisiana so I can vote for anybody I want. Here, it doesn't matter as much what you register as. ETA, I have no problem with, and do vote across party lines. When George Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, :flamemad: I switched from Republican and vowed to never be associated with them again. However, I find myself pretty much split on key issues. Now, since SLP is a criminal, I'd have to say I'm much more Republican, and extremely conservative at that, on the law and order issues. I take an extreme, pro stance on the death penalty, for instance.

On the other hand, I'm tree hugging liberal when it comes to the environment, animal rights, take from the rich and give to the poor type issues.

So, which one of the guilty sides would you put me on?

I'm very interested to see where everyone else falls too, daddy. Good question!

In my college years, I was an extremely liberal democrat (some people called us hippies and it was much to the dismay of my poor Nixonite father). He passed away in '93 but I still vividly remember the heated debates we had during Watergate. I was "anti" just about everything -- big government, the establishment, the death penalty, the oppression of the poor, etc.

I have gotten much more conservative in my old age, but I still consider myself pretty liberal. I have done a 180 on the death penalty issue. In a public speaking class in college, I remember giving a very impassioned speech in favor of abolishing the death penalty altogether. When that happened in the '70s, those words came back to haunt me. I feel partly responsible for saving the life of Charles Manson. :mad:

Nixon did a lot to ruin the Republican party. I know where I grew up in the Midwest, they still don't think Nixon did anything wrong.

I don't know what I am politically. Primaries are now open here so I vote wherever I please. I am a registered Democrat (just to outrage my family...lol) but I vote the issue, not the party.

Did Manson get the death penalty? I thought because he didn't actually commit the crimes, he was sentenced to LWOP. Did any of the others get the DP? Have any of them been paroled?

My daughter's senior class project was to chose a profession and shadow the professional. She chose to shadow the DA who prosecuted the murderer of my mother. She got to sit in on what should have been a DP case but the Supreme Court had just ruled that minors can't be given the DP. She did a great job of defending the death penalty for anyone who commits a capital crime regardless of their age. She really made me proud!

Yep. Manson and his crew were originally sentenced to death. When the Supreme Ct declared the DP, as it was written, unconstitutional, Manson and everyone else on CA's death row had their sentence commuted to life.

imoWe have true LWOP here in Louisiana. I don't believe Texas or South Carolina does though. It really ticks me off that Susan Smith will be up for parole in a few years (after 20 of her "life" sentence). She'll still be young enough to have more children. :flamemad:

You're right. At the time CA abolished the DP, LWOP wasn't an option. That's why the Manson group still gets parole hearings -- their sentence was commuted to Life. Makes me sick when I think that the taxpayers of CA are still paying to support this creep.

Democrats want laws enforced and criminals brought to justice ! They are not at all liberal about it and not liberal about very much at all.

Seems y'all chased away the advocates. While I think they will come back, I do find it extremely odd that all have left at once! :eek: Raises some questions, in my mind anyway.

I was somewhat curious to know the makeup of the forum with regards to political affiliation. Since it's only a G poll at this point, I don't know what I've learned by it.

Having said that, I am pleased that the poll has provided a rare opportunity for me to agree with Democrats and/or Liberals on something! LOL - Very rare phenomenon, but no offense to anyone on that!
