Mother Runs Over Her Small Child

A Savannah woman ran over her small child with her SUV.

The child was killed. Investigation ongoing. So far no charges have been filed.

Very sadly this is a common occurance with this happening at least 50 times a week in this country alone:

"And for drivers, we have to be more careful.' Janette Fennell, founder and president of KIDS AND CARS, a Kansas-based national nonprofit organization devoted to child safety, agreed. She said that an average of 50 children are backed over every week in the United States, with two of them dying. Also in Broward this year, three young girls, ages 3 to 7, have been run over and killed in separate incidents in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Dania Beach."

This is exactly why we insisted on back-up sensors on our SUV...it warns you inside the car if you are even close to backing into something or someone.
It's well worth the extra money and gives you a peace of mind.

I totally agree. This happens way too often and forgetting little children that are inside vehicles. It seems their minds really aren't on their children and they are very distracted.

The children's whereabouts and safety at all times should be No. 1.

I agree children should definitely be the number 1 priority. It sounds, at least so far, in this case the child dashed out of the house and the mom did not realize she had run out. Who was watching her that she was able to run out of the house? This is so sad.

Backup sensors - excellent idea especially for larger vehicles which usually have "blind spots" in the rearview mirrors.

I have a friend that back over her son 13 years ago. He was three when it happened. He is now sixteen and driving. She said she got into her van and looked up and saw him in the window waving at her. She put her car in reverse and remembered she had taken her wallet out in the house. Put the van in park. She ran back in grabbed it from a counter. Jumped back in her van and started backing up and heard thud and then crying. She had ran over his leg. He told her he had wanted to go with her and he got behind the van and was going to jump out her when she came back out. She said it was the worst thing she has ever felt. She thanks God everyday that he is not dead. She has sensors put on all her cars. In hers she has a camera that can see what is behind her.

Sensors & cameras are the way to go. With today's technology available, we parents must avail ourselves of it. My kids are grown now (thank God), but we have a grandbaby on the way. We will have the camera installed long before the bundle of joy arrives.

I remember one time my great-uncle crying on the porch one day. I was rather young and so loved this gentle man. He was so soft spoken and it was obvious how much he loved his family, children and grandchildren.

I didnt understand why he would be crying..no one had passed away at that time and I always felt him to be a strong man so I just kissed him and told him "I love you" and walked away but it bothered me and I went to ask my mother what was wrong.

Her eyes welled up with tears and she told me when he and his wife got married they later had two beautiful indentical twin boys. They were their pride and joy and such a blessing from God.

This happened long ago and they lived a much different time. Their home was very rural and only had one little country store they would walk to in order to get what they needed. Hardly a car passed by on their road.

So as he did when they wanted some candy he would walk with them everytime always staying far away from the road but that tragic day a car came careening at a high rate of speed out of no where and hit all three of them as his car spun out of control when he swerved off the shoulder of the road. He was drunk and he killed my uncle's little boys instantly and severely injured him.

He was 91 when he died and I remember him saying to us when he was dying "I have been waiting for this day to come so I can go home and see my sons.":rose:

He never got over it.

My word, how sad. I don't imagine this mother will ever get over it either. I can't imagine to lose a child in any manner, but this is heartbreaking.

I have 3 children and couldn't imagine the horror of it! I will say that everytime I back out of my driveway I am very careful and always looking because our neighborhood has a lot of children, not just mine. Last year my son was hit in front of the school by another person and I saw the whole thing. He is fine, but I was horrified. I thought for just a few seconds that he was going to die and there was nothing I could do to stop it. That's when an Angel Of God came by and put my son in his hands and protected him from harm. The driver of the vehicle that struck him later said the only reason he slammed on the brakes was because he heard me screaming. Thank God for my set of lungs too!

Its hard to know what to say. This is so tragic for the child, for the parents for everyone in their family. So much that could have been done to prevent this, which makes the whole thing even worse. In one second so much can be lost forever.

I hope if nothing else, someone (and all of us) take an extra breath to relax when we are in a rush, and realise what is really important when behind the wheel. And yes, sensors all the way!!:rose: :rose: :rose:

Oprah did a show on this because of the amount deaths of small children. It is very sad because a lot of the times the person driving is their loved one. Recently this happened to a politician from WI. He rean over his own grandaughter.

On Oprah, they put about 30 preschool children right behind a SUV. All the children were sitting down. When the driver looked in all of his mirrors, he could not see one child. Just goes to show, that drivers need to look before they ever get into their cars. IMO

i have 3 children,too. mine are 7, 5, and 2. my heart goes out to this family. hope they survive this. we must be careful to protect our children.

Reported today!! The stats are interesting because it's ALL children who get ran over this way, not just toddlers...children up to 15 !! AND the elderly !!
