So far.. it looks like a close call...!!
I haven't gotten a negative since they started posting who sends them. While it's nice to get patted on the back and it keeps threads from derailing into pats on the back for others... isn't that what "ITA" is for? <giggle>.
Since no one is using it to ding me anymore, I guess their negative of me wasn't valid to begin with... so I'll take that as a good sign.

I do not understand why everyone does not want to keep this. I have seen nothing but positives on everyone posts. And once FW works things out you will be able to disable it if you want. Come on everyone now that you can see peoples nic to has made a big difference.
I have noticed that if they can't give you a neg. rep and you not know who it is then they do not say anything at all. The one that are serious about their posting are able to state their option on the board and that is how it should be RIGHT ? It seems that the reps. are being used with respect and that is how it should be.

I guess my perspective is different than yours dallasvic (no disrespect but) Thats the problem - people won't give negatives for fear of getting one now that their nics can be seen. I'm not against nics being seen because I think its stopped the hanky panky that was going on but in all honesty I don't see any good reason for the rep system other than to cause dischord. I have to ask anyone who reads this, "Why do we need a rep system? We've never had one in the past, so why now?"

Maybe if they got rid of the rep system, the polls, the games being played there might be more comments made on the threads that are here.
Rate the Poster? for whose benefit? Isn't each person reading able to make up their own mind with out having the influence of posters playing games?
There are so many good stories at the library that it would be nice to have a message board to discuss such stories and the current news. Why not rate the stories and the writers. But rating the posters?
Just a thought shared.

I've given a negative since the feature has been implemented with no regrets because I felt what I said needed to be said without disrupting the board -- hopefully it was viewed as constructive criticism. If a comment is used correctly there's no reason not to give a negative comment if someone can learn from it. I would never just "bash" anyone for no reason whether it be a post or a rep. I also think if the neg feature is used correctly it could cut down on some of the distractions on the board (if only viewed as constructive critism)
But whatever is decided by FW and the rest of the board is fine with me. :)

My vote is that we keep it but make all the comments public. This way we can see who is voting for whom and why. I think this will make the system more meaningful.
At the moment, someone could have 200 reputation points, but we don't know whether that's made up of 8 positives or 20 positives and 10 negatives etc etc
By making the comments public, we could see who is using the system correctly and who is abusing it. I have given positive votes to people whose opinion I disagree with, but who presented interesting arguments in a polite manner and their posts made me think. Yet another poster admitted giving me a neg just becasue she disagreed with what I'd said.
In some respects, removing the anonymity of the voting is a double edged sword. It certainly has reduced (maybe even eliminated) the blank negs but some people might be wary of giving a legitimate neg for fear of retaliation out of pure spite - and let's face it, the people most likely to earn legitimate negs are quite likely to be the types who would do this! If the comments were public, it would allow everyone to decide whether they felt reputation had been earned fairly and squarely ... or not.

ITA....O2.........and especially on the Tara board.MOST of us there are there because of Tara...to try to find Tara,A MISSING PERSON,not for the sake of posting on a message board. I have gotten really interested in a few other stories and have posted, but again,Not for the sake of posting.(I followed several cases on Court TV and was extremely dedicated & interested in the process, such as Scotty boy,but I refuse to discuss that scum,he isnt worth my time) For the sake,IMO, of being able to freely and OPENLY discuss cases.(I see no need for a lot of critiquing each other, for expressing an opinion.) Thats what we're here for.
CL should at least LET US VOTE,as a community/whatever/on each forum
as to using the feature or not. I would,of course, vote NOT.

Hi Athena! Hope you're having a good one! ITA. I've also given a neg rep to a poster I felt needed to hear what was wrong with what they posted and why. I also didn't want to put it on the board because I felt it would have disrupted the rhythm of the posts and distracted from the discussion at hand. I don't think the neg rep feature should be used to bash posters who have a differing opinion than your own nor should it be used to bash posters that you don't "like". I think it should be used as constructive critism, also. But, in the end, just like you, whatever the majority decides is fine by me!
Hello Brooke!
I think the rep system is OK but I think in order for it to be fair you have to post on more than one thread. I have been a poster of a certain thread since it began, within a few weeks anyway, and my post are meet with neg remarks not for my opinion but for who I am. I received so much neg rep that it was depressing and I did not know who they were from~~but I knew by the style and words of the post WHO they came from. And yes I gave some neg back and I tried to state why I disagreed. I think probably it is a wonderful idea on most boards and since I have interests in several boards I do not worry about it. LOL, we all know who we are and what we stand for just be happy with yourself and let the neg reps give you a good chuckle. I bout laughed myself to death when the system first came out and all my bad reps came, I even pmed Freshwater to see if I might just plum disappear!!!

I second that...
This is an excellent suggestion...since the results of post approval or disapproval are public, which is the "user reputation" then it would be fair to make the backup info of those results public as well..

I will suggest that it might be more interesting/valuable to keep the rep point system board specific. That might keep the "games" minimized on each board.
That idea piques my interest Hypno... If it isn't too difficult I think it would be very telling indeed. I can see how someone would have a glowing rep at one case and a devil rep at another and then there would be people whose rep is the same everywhere and I think that would really be the real proof in the pudding as to their true nature.
Interesting to think about...

Who cares? Just be confident in yourself and your posting. Whether I do or don't have brownie points won't keep me away, and I don't have to be in the majority to feel comfortable. Everyone's opinion of whom drags down the thread is different. I guess it just depends on what side of view you are on in the thread.
My bad. I think that my post went way over your head. I'm not talking about my rep, I'm saying that I would like to increase someone else's rep. Sorry that I didn't make that clear enough for you to understand. I'm confident in my own posts and didn't even know what the rep thing was until recently. The only two negative reps that I've gotten came from an argumentative, unpleasant type so I didn't take it seriously, believe me.
Unlike some, I haven't given any negative reps. And certainly wouldn't do so just because someone has a different opinion. That would be the MO of someone who gets up on the wrong side of the bed every day of the world. I've just never been a believer in the positive aspects of negative reinforcement.

I agree with this statement. I have a continued professional interest in group dynamics because it's a major factor in bullying which is something I have to deal with regularly (I'm a teacher). It's a recognised fact that internet forums are a great place to observe group behaviour and they are often used as examples on courses which I have been on.
Anyway, I have noted one poster who is constantly rude to others and yet his/her reputation goes up and up. It therefore seems to me that some members must be giving this person positive reputation points for making rude posts!
Now this fits into the group dynamics of the bully because bullies cannot function without peer support. Forums such as this have several different groups. The forum as a whole is a group, then there are sub-groups who may follow a particular case or who share RL interests. Invariably, within these sub-groups you'll have factions on either side of the fence. Some are capable of polite discussion and others are not and will attack each other - whether blatantly or by using sarcasm. The reputation system has definitely curbed a lot of the more blatant behaviour but statistically, there will be the odd few posters who don't give a hoot and who will risk an infraction for the satisfaction of making an attack. It is my guess (based on the study of group behaviour) that there are others who refrain from attacking because they fear the consequences of an infraction, but who will still "join in" by rewarding the bolder member who doesn't give a hoot with positive reputation points for making the attack!

Girl! What's all this? Been posting with you for some time now and I gotta say I think you're losing perspective. If someone is constantly attacking you on the side and leaving negative feed back when you have not given any, take it for what it is. That person has obviously stooped to level where you don't need to go. Whatever is going on, it's time to shake it off. We need your head on Nona's board! DFTT!
(A side note, when you put someone on "Ignore" you can no longer see their negative feed back on your CP. Just a thought. If this is what is getting you down, put the person on Iggy and be done with it! )

Agree. SQ has made it clear that she not only doesn't give a hoot; she doesn't give a shi#*. Personally, I think that only lowers a person's credibility. Ironically the people with the negative attitudes are often striving the hardest to make their position understood and respected.

I think the rep system has just brought different problems with it, I've been flamed for my reputation level. When FW got the changes done all those hidden reps suddenly showed up and so I went from having one grey square to 4 greens and was accused of having engineered some kind of funny business!
I've seen other posters with high reputations being accused of getting them by "working the boards".
I think it's a distraction. I'm all in favour of infractions, but as a merit system, I don't think the reps are working as they could.

There are situations were the rep system is abused but for the most part I see it as positive. I genuinely enjoy letting others know I appreciate what they have to say. I usually try to go out of my way to find a reason to give a person I disagree with positive feed back. IMO this is a great way to foster good will on the boards. The times where I have received positive feed back in this manner has meant a lot to me. The ultimate value of the reputation system rest solely on how we the users choose to view it and use it. MOO

The problem that I have with it, is that since I have a tendency to stay in the Nona Dirksmeyer forum, I can't give +s to people that are consistently logical and able to express their thoughts in a positive manner. It's hard to spread the rep around to posters that I'm familiar with without being forced to go in search of good posts in cases that aren't of primary interests.
I don't give negative rep; if a poster is out of line enough that I have negative thoughts about his/her post, I'll simply report it. There have been some that I should have reported but didn't, which was irresponsible on my part.

As far as I know..
Green = positive
Red = negative
Blue = doesn't count because the poster that gave the rep had less than 50 posts at the time

I vote to eliminate it. There are some very childish and vindictive posters that actually gang up on people they don't like. I guess they can't stand that other people have differing opinions.
I don't see what useful purpose there is in this rating system. People can agree or disagree on the thread or take it to pm's. It just serves as a way for some posters to harass people they don't like.

Let me get this right, this one person has left FOUR reps for you in the space of 1 day??? That means he/she has been very busy with reps in order to "spread" sufficient reputation to come back to you - right?
I suppose that in order to determine whether it was "personal", we'd need to know if this person is leaving negative reps for everyone else, or positive reps for everyone else in order to spread enough reputation to leave negative reps for YOU! (does that makes sense?).
Be glad their reps aren't counting :-/

Actually - 3 in one day = 10:21 a.m., 9:50 p.m., 11:18 p.m.........
and the 4th one at 1:01 a.m.
If it is true that you must spread the reputation around, I'd say she has been a busy girl (or is she a he?).

If you ever feel like someone is singling you out and unfairly attacking you, report her to FW as you have her/his name. This is clearly breaking the rules and the spirit of the rules. This is lynch mob mentality, and I dont think it should be tollerated. imo

Are you sure its negative or just negative comments? If the person has less than 50 posts the rep points don't count. If its a red box then somethings wrong but you should only be seeing a gray(blue to some) box.
One other question, how can this person leave you that many reps in a day? I thought FW had it set up so you could only leave a person one rep in a 24hour period of time. I wonder if there's a glitch somewhere?
Please forward your info to FW so she/he can check it out.

Yes, I am sure they are negative. Comments are included/times are shown. This person had less than 50 posts when four of the negative ratings were given. They still have less than 100 and the color is blue/gray, but I expect at some point (I thought 50, too) they will turn to red.

You are welcome. Now go out there and earn those reputation points! lol
Boy, I need to get out more (into different areas of the board.) I didn't even have a clue this was here--altho I have some comments as early as June 13, I think.
I have 233 "points" whatever that means. lol
Do we get prizes or something if we reach say, 500 points or so? :)
I did enjoy the comments made by fellow posters..but haven't a clue as to how to comment on their posts (which is why I usually make my comments on the thread.)
Guess I will look to see more about this.
From the other posts, I guess one purpose it might serve is to keep some of the personal differences off the board, and just between 2 posters? I don't suppose someone with a certain number of negatives would eventually be banned---especially if the negative is all coming from one person?
It would be interesting to know why I only have 22 posts, tho. I'm sure I've done a tad bit more than that since this forum opened.

Does this person have a negative (red) or neutral (blue) reputation him/herself?
I could be wrong, but isn't there two qualificants for a person's votes to count?
1) that they must have more than 50 posts
2) that their own reputation must be postive?
I thought I read this somewhere along the lines.

Hi Luke..:seeya:
I think sometimes the number of green boxes is only a reflection of how many friends that poster has, friends that would give that poster pos rep whether he is right or wrong, whether or not he violates the rules..for example, that poster who had 11 green boxes most likely violated the rules, otherwise, FW would not have banned him...on the other hand, I think sometimes a poster might have a red box just because his view of the case he is posting about is in the minority, and some posters would give a neg rep just because they have a difference of opinion..that's why he is still posting..
Just my 2 cents...:D

90% of the forums I belong to have done away with thier reputation features. A lot of them have sited that they're just glorified popularity meters, and as such, they should be disabled, because even "unpopular" people have valid opinions, etc.
A lot of people were giving extra points to their best friends and ganging up on people they didn't like.
The Crested Gecko forum I belong to disabled their Kharma system several months ago, and now people aren't fighting amongst themselves or sucking up to the administrator, either.

Unfortunately you are probably right and some posters don't use them as they were intended to be used. I honestly can say that I've given pos rep for the quality of a post, even to those I disagree with. The only negative rep I've given was to a poster who chose to make their point within their post with this EXTRA LARGE FONT that was so totally distracting that when I gave it I was doing it as constructive criticism as the content was not against TOS. The poster, BTW, never said anything but stopped using the EXTRA LARGE FONT. Other posts that are against the rules, I leave up to the mods to deal with. JMO

I don't think negative reputation points should EVER be given based on a poster's opinion or whether you like the person or not.
They should only be given based on violating TOS, fighting with another poster, or actions that are disruptive to the forum. and in that case, they should be reported to the admin. or whoever is running that particular part of the board.
Postitive reputation points should only be given for quality of posts. NOT popularity or opinion. And there should be a way to block people who just hit the rep. button again and again. All positive rep should have to be explained in some way.

I guess it really works better this way. I know that on the rare occasion that I gave someone a neg. I'd get a whining PM from them and shortly thereafter they'd usually find a reason to give me one. This way it's positive or nothing.
I think the fact that you cannot give someone more than one rep point before giving some unknown number to other people keeps us from awarding too many points to our friends.

There, another example of the word twisting, yes I admit I disagreed with your post, but it was the sarcastic, rude manner, than as we all know, you run to FW or CW and report people type of posts I agree with. Probably with all the nics you have made up. I didn't know people had different nics all over the place. I like the Reputation Feature and I hope that it stays. I hope that FW considers the total amount of active members here as a whole, the amount of votes on this particular thread, and the responses here which only reflect a small portion of the whole, of which a majority are from a particularly volatile forum.

I don't know, you're still here so obviously you are lying. Or playing innocent again.
Both the same. How many nics do you have now? Are you still reporting posters using both nics in hopes of getting people banned like you did before? Yep, that is the real poster FW, don't let her fool you.
;)
Thanks so much for your honesty. I'm sure you speak for many of us here who are tired of the tricks and subterfuge and nastiness that some seem to revel in. It no longer seems to be about voicing your opinion on a topic but instead how many times you can smugly say something and then praise yourself in one of your duplicate nics, or run to your other forum and lay out a plan of action for everyone to gang up on a poster you dislike. It's all truly so childish that I feel like I should be buying school supplies next month and working on my outfit for the first day of 8th grade. JMHO.

I don't want anyone to get into trouble for what I have posted here, but I felt the need to speak out about this poster. Her rudeness and obvious need to bash any opposing view from her own is tiresome and not what this board is about. Her endless one liners and posts about posters themselves instead of the content of the posts is on these boards for all to see. Than she sends nasty comments that can only be seen privately, all the while playing innocent to FW. It is not true and this poster is a farce. She has created drama and has done her best to inflame people who have added greatly to this thread. She has an agenda and it isn't about opinions even, it is about control of the board. She can not stand anyone to post something she does not agree with. Her responses are seldom about the topic, they are bait about the poster or posters.
FW....you can delete me, that is fine. I just want you to be aware of what she is doing. She is not being honest with you. She is setting good poster up with her lies. She has in the past created multiple nics to create drama and report posters. Why report with one nic, when you have 2,3,4, 5 or however many she creates at all here different places she posts. She has said it herself and I quote from her post " One at home/another at work/on on their PC/another of their laptop." What does that tell you? She is doing it. And I am confident when I say I know why, so she can report and harass people with all her nics.
Sorry for the commotion FW. It just was time it was out in the open.

Well this has been an informative morning. I hope FW comes in and addresses the use of multi nics. It seems to me, if you try and register a second nic, your IP would identify you. Using more than one nic seems rather unfair to me, kinda like a stacked deck.
That's why that particular poster wants to keep the Rep featrue when most of us do not. ( The votes are in and the majority want it gone ! They are tired of being bullied and misrepresented by the minority , a pack of bullies , who devote their lives to reporting others under their multiple nics and giving them bad reps for the wrong reasons. As you say, that one's Comments are offensive and nothing to do with the Topics we discuss )
We are tired of that game of multi nics. They evidently have several servers.
One poster continues to insinuate a poster is Stupid on the boards and rather than have an argument with them there and disrupt the boards, I gave them negatives for baiting and passing out unsubstantiated information, they made it up in fact. They never provide links either and are very rude.
I guess the squeaky wheel gets the soothing oil but I'm not about to spend my life reporting infractions because they are too time consuming.
I can't imagine who is silly enough to give any Bad reps now even if the other poster calls you an obscene name, you get punished for it...
The majority, who are NOT bullies, have voted to have it removed.
Only the bullies want to retain it for their own dark purposes.
That remains my view.

While I agree with most of what you said, I like the feature and voted to keep it. I just see that as just another bully tactic. I believe that there are some bullies that are jealous when they see a line of green dots next to a poster that they don't agree with. Therefore, they would love to see the feature removed. Of course, there are other message boards that don't have that feature at all, which I suppose could be an option for some.
I stated my reasons for liking the feature. Not everyone will agree with those reasons. But a snarky response generally indicates that the response is a personal one rather than an intellectual or logical one, which is just another example of bully tactics to make a point.

There, another example of the word twisting, yes I admit I disagreed with your post, but it was the sarcastic, rude manner, than as we all know, you run to FW or CW and report people type of posts I agree with. Probably with all the nics you have made up. I didn't know people had different nics all over the place. I thought that one should be enough, but I guess when you used them to make yourself look good, you would know all about that.
I have always been respectful of people who have different opinions. That's great!! But not people who talk out of both sides of their mouth. You are great at that. Everyone knows it.
Now go whine, use all your nics. It's a shame you are being outed for what you are isn't it?
:punch:
These are wonderful and kinds remarks? Accusations of multiple nics and running to Freshwater/CW? Accusations that she can't/won't back up with proof.

I am going to assume this post was in response to mine. If you know how I got greenies, please, do tell. And if you were given negative feedback, I am sure it was because of the tone or manner in which your opinion was posted. You are free to report such things to FW just like the rest of us are. To attack me was childish and inappropriate. And thank you for admitting what you did.

ETA - I appreciate all of the back and forth. I think this has probably given anyone who is interested food for thought about what happened here.
With that I bid you a farewell.

Why in the world would anyone feel desperate over a message board? So much so that they would go out of their way to hurt others that they don't even know? It amazes me.

My personal opinion is it should be the post and not the poster that gets attacked - that simply dont happen tho and the other thing is too much is getting brought over from ctv which isnt right either jmo
I completely agree with you. The reputation feature should apply to the post and not the poster. A poster given a bad rep for a particular reason should be able to see on their post exactly what the problem was. It should not be used for just a general personal attack as some here have done. It's a shame that some have abused it so much that it has now become an issue.

Truth hurts doesn't it?
Why are you so worried about it? If it wasn't true you would know you have nothing to worry about, you protest too much, which speaks volumes.
Oh and the remarks, they pale to the babies you left people. I am not protending anything, as you are doing.
You have proven me right already today. :seeya:

The problem i have with that is when i know some people are trying to cause trouble for there own purposes. As ive said more than once..Fw should be left to sort any problems...he is the moderator and not us jmo
That is funny you would write that. Since you have made accusations about people that are not true. You have caused problems for your own purposes. You have got people banned from other forums based on lies. Pathetic really.
Kazzer, you said I was a spy and that that I was telling people on this board stuff that was going on over at the other forum. Prove it. Not one person from this forum could ever say that I gave them any information. No one has proof because it was never true.
Do not sit in here and act all high and mighty like you are someone that does the right thing. You need to grow up and stop playing little girl games.
I hope people soon realize the truth about you. Good luck Kazzer, you are going to need it.

There are definitely a few here who seem to delight in cut downs and trying to get others warned, or banned. I'm not sure what they get from it, but they do it. I think I got my first disapproval the day I started posting here. Not a day goes by that I don't get some insulting or catty reply to some post I made. When I go back and reread, I see nothing that would have set someone off but it seems that there are several who need no reason. Just seeing my nic seems to be enough. This started, as I said, the very first day I posted here.
I like being able to give approvals for especially good posts but the negative feature, to me, is just a pi**ing match. I see no value to it.
