I enjoyed seeing pictures of posters' pets, and I was feeling guilty about taking the "One Reason" thread off topic. So I thought I would start an off-topic thread where we can get to know each other as people other than SIIs or SIGs.

Another shot of my biggest cat, Oliver. They all love to hang out up there.

Last July 4 my daughter and I had a barbecue (she and her two dogs lived with me for about 8 months) because I figured this would be a great spot to watch fireworks. Then it started to pour a half-hour before they were due to start. They rescheduled them for the next night, and she was out. I sat on the front porch with the dogs and watched them -- I'll try again this year.

Oh, not far from me at all! My daughter moved here 8 1/2 years ago, and I finally figured that if I ever have grandchildren, it would be nice to see them more than twice a year (she was engaged when I made the decision to move, but she called it off). It's very laid back here, and the people seem much friendlier than they were back in New York. And I love the weather (except for the blizzard we had just before Christmas, though that was kind of fun for maybe the first day).

I don't doubt that. I remember our pekinese being mean little rascals. In fact, I remember getting bit on the nose a time or two.
If pekinese were big dogs they would be dangerous.

This is my cat when he was 1 year old with my son who was 4. The cat is 11 now. I thought he was Siamese when I bought him but I think he's a Balinese. His body shape is more like a regular cat but his markings are of a seal point Siamese.

From the floor to the counter to the top of the fridge to the top of the cabinets. Sometimes two of them will get up there and then have turf wars. Never a dull moment! Getting down is interesting, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jjkUua_HNE

enlightenme...It's so sweet when the dog and cat get along. Your Siamese looks like a sweetie. We have a long-haired one in Louisiana. She's the "middle" cat complete with all of the "middle child" personality quirks. Siamese are weird in all of my experience with them anyway. But so beautiful, yeah! Your dog reminds me of a Rhodesian ridgeback that a friend had. Great dogs!

My daughter and her two dogs moved in with me a couple of weeks after I moved here, and stayed for 8 months. I got Bendix four months after she moved in, so for the next four months we had 3 dogs and 3 cats. The little guy, Maynard, thinks he's Top Dog. Otis, the senior Lab, lets Ben chew on him as much as he wants. He's a sweetie.

Peke's are usually fearless, IMO. But so cute!

I take my 2 dogs to an off-leash dog park not to far from my house nearly every day. There are dogs there from Great Danes to little miniature breeds. The little dogs seem to come in barking their heads off, with an attitude of "don't mess with me!"

There's a Great Dane there that loves to play with a small bulldog. They've played together since they were puppies and they love each other. Although, the Great Dane has to lie down and have the bulldog jump all around and on it. It's hilarious!

I never knew one could love an animal this much. It's crazy. I think about him constantly. I love my cats too....and my bird....but this thang he's sumthin' else! It's like havin' another baby! One that will never grow up....

My daughter didn't seem like she was a baby long at all....she could hold a juice cup at 5 months...walked at 9 months...was talking good by a year....was potty trained at 16 months...hasn't shut up since year 2..... at 5 she was going on 25. So, I don't feel like I had a baby long at all. Momo is a wonderful substitute...except since he can't talk...I talk for him....b/f thinks this is weird.....and you'd think Momo is my boyfriend, Brian is so jealous of him! Just cuz I said I might start cookin' for Momo...Brian's whining...I don't cook for us....SO! Our food hasn't been recalled....DUH!

She finally jumped into my car and into my heart!

Her name is Chewy, short for Chewbacca on Star Wars because some of the happy howls she makes.

Thank you both. He is cute...(if I do say so...) but it's his personality, which a pic doesn't do justice to, that will make you squeal! Wait till y'all see the bird! He's a riot!

We don't know what Elmo is. I suspect he is a baby (maybe a 2 or 3 year old) that's trapped in a dog's body. He is as sensitive as a blood hound. He sort of looks like a Chihuahua with some kind of terrier (fox, Jack Russell, rat...who knows) mixed in. He has short legs like a weenie dog. His tail curves and he LOVES to dig which makes me think he is a Carolina dog....decendant of the dingos in Australia. You know there is a place you can send a DNA swab to and they will tell you what they are. I will see how much it is. Just another thing to set Brian off about. :D

Bless your heart for picking her up! I tried to steal...I mean...pick up a dog from the beach in Hanalei Bay the other day. She definitely would have come with me but Brian put his foot down....give him an inch, he becomes a ruler!

Chewy is very healthy, shiny like an oil slick! I wish Momo would look healthier like O2Snoop's Cha Cha & your Chewy. He's being extremely finicky about what he'll eat right now. He must be eating rocks or something...I'm about ready to break down and give him some recalled food just to see him eat!

I've been looking forward to this trial. Though I'm a little disappointed that the defendant no longer has the big hair -- I could've used the laugh.

Twice Cutler was effective in preventing a jury in Federal Court from convicting John Gotti. He totally frustrated Federal prosecutors. To convict Gotti, Federal prosecutors first had to get rid of Cutler.

Quality clients or not, like him or not, Cutler knows how to talk to a jury. Next to Gerry Spence, I think he has more insight into jury selection and argument management than any other defense attorney.

I'm waiting impatiently for the defense opening statement. Once again, I know very little about this case and it'll be interesting to see it unfold. From what I've heard, I'm wondering if this was just an accident that was waiting to happen. He's charged with first-degree murder? I think that's a stretch.

From today's NYTimes:

It took about eight months for authorities to charge Spector with murder. They are proceeding on a theory of ''implied malice,'' alleging he did not intend to kill Clarkson but caused her death by reckless behavior and taking an extreme risk.

If convicted of second-degree murder, he could face 15 years to life in prison.

Yes, it WILL be interesting.

I don't have a bird (though I'm sure my dog and 3 cats would just love it if I did!). I once visited a cousin who had two parrots, and one of them kept calling the puppy . . . who would run over to see who was calling him. My older daughter's ex-boyfriend had a wonderful bird who would sit on my shoulder and whisper into my ear. I didn't know what he was saying, but it sure sounded like he loved me! Very sad thing -- they didn't know about the dangers of cooking with Teflon until a pan overheated and it was too late.

This is such a nice thread. I'm petless, but EM's rescued Chewy and the birdie reminds me of my last dog. He was a rescue dog and the sweetest old thing. He loved his walks and one day we went past a neighbor's house. In the driveway was this huge parrot! Bear was in love! We'd have to go to this house everyday just in case the parrot was outside again. This dog would kill a cat in a heartbeat, but this parrot ... he just melted.

Oh, the parrot lived there and the neighbor was right there too, so don't worry, he wasn't lost or anything. He could talk too, that suprised Bear! :D

Well, I'm annoyed . . . CourtTV has us (here in the Mountain time zone) on the Eastern feed, and trial coverage ends at 3:00 or 4:00, depending on whether or not Catherine Crier shows it. I assume the California courts go on beyond that time, without us, while we're subjected to old Cops reruns.

I haven't even heard of "What About Brian" - what is it about, other than Brian :D

This was written when the show first started back in 2006 - its basically another night time soap.....

What About Brian
Premieres April 2006

Brian is the guy everyone wants as a best friend. He's the guy who'll stand by you at your wedding, drive you to the hospital, cheer your kids on at their little league game... the guy who every wife dotes on and every husband wants to either grab a beer with or live vicariously through him. But as all of his friends pair off and Brian emerges as the last bachelor standing, questions begin to arise in his head: Is there such a thing as Miss Right? Why does love have to be so complicated? What is his problem with commitment? And the most pressing question of all, could all of his problems stem from the fact that he is harboring a crush on his best friend's girl?

I just spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to upload an image. Everyone else had pictures of their furbabies and I felt left out.

I changed my avatar to show my Papillon, Pierre. He is 14 yrs young and I adopted him from a breed specific rescue group. The screening process was worse than trying to adopt a human baby. LOL. My other furbaby is a Sheltie mix we adopted from the local shelter. She had been abused. It took her a long time to learn to trust us, but she is the Queen of the house now and she knows it. A bit bossy around her brother but he doesn't seem to mind.

Whether we all agree on the issues being discussed or not -- anyone who loves their pet as much as all of you do, is A-OK in my book.

This post is awesome. I am a animal love also. Me dog was kill a few yrs ago and I decided to to get another one. It hurt to bad when I lost her.She was my buddy. She was part shepard and part wolf. She would sleep with me. She was a inside outside dog. LOL I other word she came in and out when she wanted. She learned how to open my french doors but I never got around to teaching her how to close it.She would snick off to my room to nap on the bed . She would lay criss cross and went she seen me coming she would get up and lay long ways with her head on her pillow and once I was in bed she would move around until apart of her body was touching me ,usually her front paw and then she would go fast asleep. I really MISS her.
Now I have 2 black cat that were strays and I took them in and got their shot and they have been with me for awhile now. They are spoiled house cats now they never want outside i guess because they were abadond and they . So they feel safe in my home. YES they are spoiled rotten!!!!!!;)
I have pic's of them . When I find out how to post them her I will.

What a doll! I love that age. Up until about two years ago, I didn't feel ready to be anybody's grandmother. But suddenly I've got the fever. I moved here thinking I'd be getting grandbabies soon -- my daughter was engaged. But she broke the engagement about two weeks before I made the move, and then about 3 weeks after I got here she moved in with ME and stayed 8 months.

Anybody know a nice man with a decent job who lives in Denver and would appreciate a sweet, sensitive, beautiful girl (who is slightly high maintenance)?

Do you have any online photo storage, like photobucket.com or kodak? That's probably the easiest solution -- if you upload pictures to one of those sites, then you can right-click on a photo you want to post and save the image location to memory by choosing that option in the box that comes up. Then here on the board, click the little yellow icon that looks like a picture of a mountain, and control-V to paste the image location in there (make sure you end up with only one http:// since that will already be in the box when it pops up).

You can add a picture as an attachment by scrolling down the reply page to "manage attachments" and then click "browse" to bring up the contents of your pictures folder. But that's a little more restrictive, since pictures must be below a certain file size. The photobucket (or whatever) solution is the easiest.

Hey y'all...here's a pic of Elmo trying to get Curdy to play chase. See how interested Curdy looks....he just sits there and looks at Momo like...."get outta here ya dumb dog!" Curdy will take a swat when Elmo actually pulls his leg or tail. Elmo takes off while Curdy still sits in place. Elmo's like SHOOT! It was so funny I took Elmo to the neighbor's to babysit the other night. He tried the same thing with their cat who promptly pounced on Elmo with claws and teeth. Y'all shoulda heard Elmo screaming! As soon as he got over it he tried to persuade the cat again, this time barking loudly and keeping his distance.

Curdy and my cat Samantha June (Sam) are about the same size. Poor Elmo, he has no idea what a real cat can do to him. Sam hates dogs. Actually, Sam hates most other cats too. She really should have been 'an only.' It's nice Oliver is tolerant of dogs, isn't it.....

It took awhile -- up until about 15 months ago, my cats had never met a dog. I was getting ready to move out here and I made 3 cat trips, a week apart, starting with Ollie (the bravest). They were introduced to Amy's dogs and Maynard was like the Energizer bunny, constantly chasing them. The cats would leap over the gate in the doorway of the spare bedroom. After I moved, Amy and the dogs moved in here with me for awhile. Ollie was the only one who would venture out of hiding for the first couple of months. The other two finally came around -- I think it was when I was away and the dogs were in the crate while Amy was at work, and the cats realized they could stand right outside the crate and wave and make funny faces and the dogs couldn't get to them. The dynamic changed and they were no longer intimidated.

Thanks for the 'how to move an animal' lesson. I don't know if Brian and Elmo will be making the trip back to LA eventually. I may have to come back and dognap Elmo. He's going to have to come to school with me as class pet. I cannot imagine leaving him! Y'all will probably see Brian's news story (as a missing person) until Momo and I arrive safely back in LA. Then I'll call and give the anon-tip where he is "hiding out."

After researching all the airlines, I had to make one trip with each cat individually. Ollie's trip was a dedicated cat trip -- Amy met me at the airport and I got back on the next plane and returned to NY.

It's a huge problem, and I spent a lot of hours trying to figure it out. Maybe you can get several friends to come to Hawaii just before you leave, and each person carry one pet back (though you may have to travel on two different planes, since there's usually a limit of how many carry-on pets can be in one cabin). You'd probably have better luck doing that than I did trying to recruit someone to fly from New York to Denver.

LOL!! A2Me - I hope Brian doesn't see this post! When are you planning to come back? Aren't you going to bring some of the chickens, too? :D I'm sure you will miss the roosters crowing at dawn.Ya know, Sun...I woke up in the wee hours nursing a hangover and thinking....I'm gonna miss these damn roosters! We can't hear them in our bedroom because of the fountain Brian installed in the fish/turtle pond right outside the sliding glass door and the noise of our fan. It's perfect. However, when I fall asleep anywhere else in the house...they do wake me...and they crow all hours of the day and night....especially when something wakes one of them up at night.....they all have a conversation across the neighborhood about it.

Otter, I'm so glad you enjoy the Elmo & Curdy pic and stories. Between those two and the bird, it's like Animal Planet around here. The bird is just as nutty as the dog and I ever could be. This morning I woke up with Brian trying to catch the bird because he was sitting on the bed watching me sleep. Brian can't stand the thought of an animal in the bed....somehow, I got a pass. :D So the bird is putting up a major protest and I'm saying "LEAVE HIM ALONE! He watches over me while I sleep!" And he does....and if I don't let him do whatever he wants.....I don't sleep. When I get my picture posting lesson (so I'll stop blowing the margins) I'll post a pic of the walls where he peels all the paint off because I let him do what he wants most of the time.

Well, Anne, I just got back from the vet with Curdy....9 pounds 13 oz. He was so good too! And OH GLORIOUS DAY.......we found something Elmo will eat. They have this fish oil stuff - Welactin - in a pump bottle that you squirt over the food. I rehydrated the Force by The Honest Kitchen, put a squirt of the Welactin and down the finicky little cat/dog gobbled! I can't express how happy that made me. Of course, who knows next meal.....I'll let y'all know.:seeya:

9 pounds 13 oz . . . whoa, he looks so much bigger in the picture (I guess Elmo is smaller than I thought because Curdy looks almost as big as he is!). Ollie is 20 pounds. Lugging him on the plane in the carrier really did me in. I just noticed a couple of days ago that my elbows aren't bothering me anymore -- it only took a little over a year. Seriously. You should have a much easier time with your guys.

I can't believe he's gained a pound since our last visit because he won't eat hardly anything I try to feed him. Ever seen a dog that doesn't like treats? He doesn't. I've tried chicken, duck, everything. He would eat peanut butter until I got the bright idea to put this horrible medicine for mange in it. Now he won't go near peanut butter.....

Brian just called and said Elmo's hunting crabs on the beach....maybe he's been eating the sand crabs....he usually just tries to get them to play chase.

From Wikipedia:

Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are illogical in terms of everything that has preceded them. Once a show has "jumped the shark", fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm . . .

Jumping the shark...I'll have to practice using that one. Wonder how it came into use in the first place. Is it because of a failed attempt to actually jump over a shark? Like, everybody was having a great time in the ocean and then some idiot tried to jump a shark and the entire day went to hell???????????

Like, everybody was having a great time in the ocean and then some idiot tried to jump a shark and the entire day went to hell???????????
From answers.com:

Origin

The phrase specifically arises from a scene in the hit TV comedy series Happy Days. In the early days of the series, Fonzie had performed a trademark jump on his motorcycle with a ramp over a number of cars - Evel Knievel style. Evel Knievel, at the time, had established himself as a real-life motorcycle daredevil and was significant in pop-culture.

In later years of the show, after the high school plot had finished and the college years began, and in an attempt to resurrect the show's run, the writers were challenged to come up with new, fresh stories; they developed a story where Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, wearing his trademark leather jacket despite the well-known negative effects of salt water on leather, literally jumps over a shark on water skis.

Many have noted the shark episode as the moment when they realized the show was no longer worth watching, considering the scene to be unrealistic and of poor quality, making it impossible to maintain suspension of disbelief. Even before "jumping the shark" was employed as a pop culture term, the episode in question was cited many times as an example of what can happen to otherwise high-quality shows when they stay on the air too long in the face of waning interest. Producer Garry Marshall later admitted that he knew the show had lost something as the crew prepared to shoot the scene. However, as he pointed out in the reunion special that aired on February 3, 2005, Happy Days went on to produce approximately 100 more episodes after the "jumping the shark" episode. During the same special, in response to an audience member's question, Marshall introduced the notorious clip and noted how the show had inspired the term.

This seems to be a common problem throughout the forum - IMO, this could've been sent to you in a pm instead of rating you on it.
I've chosen to disable mine because there are evil fairies out there who will give you a bad rating for no reason - sometimes they leave the comment section blank - and there's nothing in the post that inidicates its negative.
Confusing to say the least.

I'm furious! I have a wild bird feeder outside in the one tree I can put it in. My 16-yr. old next door neighbor is always target practicing with his B-B gun. Well, this beautiful morning I get up, refill my bird feeder. Not long after, I hear POW! The sound always scares Buddy so he was flying frantically around the living room. I look outside and couldn't believe my eyes. A dead dove right under my bird feeder! :flamemad: Well, I was livid. I went outside, checked the bird, sure enough, shot right through the damn neck! Now I'm effin' seething pissed off mad. I grab the phone book....Brian has to look up the number to the cops for me I'm so mad. He pleads with me to "have a talk" with the boy and not call the cops. I explain that would not be wise. I'm way too angry and will go to jail for beating juvey's butt. So, Brian goes out, tells him I'm beyond mad and want to call the police. The kid LIES and tells Brian the dove was in HIS yard and must have crossed the fence after he shot it. See, if I would have tried talking to him and he would have lied to my face........I woulda jerked his tongue right out of his mouth....and pulled his fingers off! So I called the cops, the kid ran, cops came and left...neighbors came back and Brian goes and tells them they should pick up all their paraphinalia because the cops are coming back....AND THEN HE APOLOGIZES! Well, I AM NOT SORRY!!!!! Now I'm REALLY SEETHING MAD! He apologized! I'm so mad I could SPIT! I want to throw knives and break glass! I am not sorry. I hope the kid goes to jail! I think he should have to do about 2 years community service at the Kauai Humane Society under strict supervison and not be allowed around any animals lest he kill them. JACKASS!:cuss:

Ooooh, I don't blame you. I would be furious, too. And you can bet that if he hasn't already, he will soon be shooting at your pets. Those cops should take that gun away from him and tell him "You'll shoot your eye out."

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fe/RedRBB90s.jpg/350px-RedRBB90s.jpgI love that line...'You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

The thought of him shooting Elmo, Buddy or Curdy makes me sick. I really don't think the little creep is capable of that since they have a bunch of dogs. The idea of retaliation for me calling the cops could make the idea of harming my pets cross his mind.........WOE TO HIM should he carry out such evil.

My pets are like children to me. And I will defend them as I would any "innocent 3rd party" whose life I deem to be in danger. I wonder what justifiable homocide laws in Hawaii are......I know them well for Louisiana.

You know, I remember shooting snakes all my life (no snakes here to shoot!). I grew up around guns, hunters...dove hunters. I don't have a problem with someone killing something if they are going to eat it. However, I do have a serious problem with someone shooting the birds I'm feeding....or those people who go to those hunting "ranches" and shoot exotic animals. It's like fishing in a barrel. I could cuss somebody for everything their worth for doing chicken sh*t things like that in the name of sport! :cuss:

Maybe I shouldn't have called the police. Elmo gets out of the fence and goes into their yard whenever he wants to. He did it yesterday after all this. And Brian was punishing me for going against his wishes so he wouldn't go get Elmo. I don't have a problem trying to get Elmo when he goes over there. But he'll listen to Brian long before he will me.

DANG! He's gone now! grrrrrrrrr

whew! found him

Yesterday, Brian and I took his little 14' Lightening out in the ocean. He bought the boat from a friend. It came with pole holders and a fish finder! I spent the day driving the boat and trying to take pictures. I want to post a couple to try and give y'all perspective on what you can/can't see. We are traveling east along the north shore of Kauai. I was watching the water depth on the fish finder when it jumped from 31 to 85 feet. Guessing we are maybe 1/2 mile out from Kilihiwai beach (I don't think it's on the map). There are people on the beach, houses on the ridge and along the road....can't see much though.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t14/accordn2me_2007/BoatTrip013.jpg

Second pic....we are about to go between Kilauea Lighthouse and the bird sanctuary on Moku'ae'ae Islet. Here's a link for your reading pleasure:
http://www.hawaiiweb.com/kauai/html/sites/kilauea_lighthouse.html

I'm guessing we are maybe 500 yards out.....

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t14/accordn2me_2007/BoatTrip014.jpg

Also, there was another boat out near the crater when we were over there. It was relatively close and I couldn't tell what they had on their boat...the lures they were using....or what the people on the boat looked like, other than I knew they were men...buff ones.

The surf report was less than 2 feet and the tide was rising. However, it was rough for our little boat. The tides and currents were so narly! I couldn't believe it....note to self: get a lifejacket that I will wear instead of those orange ones we keep so we won't get a ticket.....I was covered in gritty salt and soaking wet when we got back to shore.

It would be soooooooooo easy to take and dump a body, IMO. Tell y'all what....next time we go out....I'll get Brian to throw me over while I play dead....fair enough? I don't weigh as much as pregnant Laci...but Brian is not as big or heavy as Scott, either.

Huge difference! Brian keeps asking about people surfing in the gulf. I'm like.. ..noone surfs off the coast of Louisiana. He doesn't believe me. My daughter posted some pics on myspace of the tubing party they had for her birthday. My first comment was...WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT WATER! Soooooo muddy looking.

I love it here! Sad about have to pack for home. We are going kayaking this weekend in a river. Then on the Na Pali coast in July. I'll try to take some pics and post a couple for you.

Brian is already trying to get out of our kayaking trip in the morning so he can take his boat and fish. I'll post a pic when he downloads them. Nice looking Ahi, A2me. When we had the restaurant on the Bay we used to have Hawaiian Ahi shipped to us by air the same day it was caught - it was sooooo good!!
Now, about the boat - did Brian REGISTER it?
Oh, almost forgot... the Dr. gave me a prescription that says I need to go to your house to get better - it should only take a few years!! Lihui airport???

Airport code is LIH for Lihue. Come on! We'll take you out in the registered LJ7. Not only registered....Brian is trying to get it ready to get some special certificate from the Coast Guard. I'm not sure why he's on that kick as it's not a requirement. He's just so gung ho on this boat. His back is really sore today from fighting those two fish yesterday. We're taking it easy until we have to take our friends out on the river later this afternoon.

Tell me about the restaurant on the bay. Morro Bay? SF Bay...or another bay?

You should plan on staying here at least 6 years. That's how much teaching I have before I retire and move permanently....although we'll keep the house in Baton Rouge too. It's my first house I had built and it's in the garden district.....so beautiful! I'll post some pics when I get back.

I agree I'm Sun. I must apologize for not being around much the past few days - I was really taken in by this case because its where I grew up and still have family who reside there. My computer has been messed up lately. This site hasn't been the problem....it's myspace that's jackin' with me.
