Hendersonville – The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will be conducting a Booze It and Lose It Checkpoint sometime during the weekend of Friday, March 16 and Sunday, March 18. Officers from both agencies will participate in this checkpoint.

This checkpoint is part of the weekend-long Booze It and Lose It Campaign all across the state sponsored by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program. Deputies from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force throughout the weekend all over the county working to ensure that the roads are safe and free of drunk drivers.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol to once again work together to ensure that the roads are safe throughout Henderson County” says Sheriff Rick Davis. “Additionally, this is an opportunity for us to point out how important it is that no one drink and drive.”

I wish it wasn't necessary to set up checkpoints to make people realize that noone should drink and drive. This is such a pet peeve of mine. I live on LI and some of you may have read the story; but a man had gone out to buy a pack of cigarettes at 5PM in the afternoon. On his way back home there were cars that had stopped at a red light. The man never slowed down and his jeep stuck and killed two 12-13 year old boys who were sitting in the middle of a van driven by their coach to a soccer game. Witnesses said he never even slowed down which indicated he was not even aware of the stopped traffic or the red light.

The man was killed as well and at first because he was 80 years old they thought he had a heart attack. They did an autopsy and found out he was drunk.

There are so many stories out there like this. As far as I am concerned all drunk drivers should have their licenses revoked and their cars towed and sold. They don't deserve to have the privilege of driving.

For the drunk drivers that hurt other people in the process they should be charged with murder or attempted murder. It is no different than someone carrying a gun and shooting someone.

I belong to MADD at our local HS and I have been called many a night by Seniors to come pick them up because they were drinking and knew they shouldn't drive. Some of them won't call their parents because they say they would be angry and not pick them up anyway. If any parents are reading this I hope you will take that telephone call instead of risking your teen's, their friends or other people's lives. JMHO
