On March 5, 2007, at 04:30 p.m. Chief Richard Miranda held a press conference at the Main Police Station. The purpose of the press conference was to give an update on the developments in this case. The Chief provided the following updates:
On Sunday February 18, 2007 officers were called to U-Store-It located at 519 E. Prince Rd. Officers discovered the remains of a young female believed to be between the age of 2 and 4. After two weeks of extensive investigation the following details have emerged:
Shortly after the postmortem examination, the Pima County Medical Examiner ruled the child’s death a homicide, but for investigative purposes we are not going to comment on exact cause of death at this time.
Investigative leads identified Christopher Payne as a subject of interest in this case.
On Wednesday February 28th, we began an extensive effort to locate Christopher Payne. On Thursday February 29th, Christopher Payne was located and after consultation with the County Attorney, he was charged with Child Abuse and First-Degree Murder for the child’s death.
While we are awaiting forensic confirmation, based upon our investigation, we suspect the victim is his biological daughter, Ariana Payne (DOB Oct. 2002 approx.- 4 yoa). The mother of the victim is identified as Jamie Hallan, 30 yoa.
Detectives are currently investigating the whereabouts of a second child of Mr. Payne. This child is identified as Tyler Payne (DOB Nov 2001 - approx. - 5 yoa), who is the brother of Ariana. We suspect that Tyler may also be the victim of foul play.
During the course of our investigation, information caused us to look in the Los Reales Landfill for evidence of this crime, but there was nothing of evidentiary value found at the landfill.
The investigation continues but we are providing photographs of Ariana and Tyler. If anyone should have information concerning the death of Ariana or the whereabouts of Tyler we are asking you to contact 791-4499 x1238 (TPD tipline) or 88-Crime.
