SYNOPSIS: Costa Mesa Police were summonded to the Mesa Verde Convalescent Center regarding an assault to commit murder investigation.
The nursing staff had responded to patient Mastos’ room after hearing his cries for help. The staff discovered Drougas, a unathorized visitor, inside Mastos’ room. Drougas was detained by the convalescent care staff after it was learned that he had attempted to smother Mastos with a pillow, as he lay asleep in his bed. There is no apparent relationship between Drougas and Mastos, and a motive for the assault is still under investigation. Mastos did not suffer any physical injuries during the incident. Drougas was arrested for attempted murder and assault on a dependent adult. He was booked into the Costa Mesa Jail with one million dollars bail.
