GARDAI have sent evidence from Operation Trace, the investigation into the disappearances of six women in the Midlands, to the FBI for computer analysis by specialists.
Last week a garda detective took the files on the missing women to the FBI academy at Quantico, home to the bureau’s investigative computer training unit.
Operation Trace, an acronym for tracing, reviewing and collecting evidence, was set up in 1993 after Pat Byrne, the then garda commissioner, attended courses at Quantico.
When he retired as head of the force some years later, Byrne said that the failure to find any of the women or to bring anyone to justice in the cases was his biggest regret.
