In 1954 a murdered young girl was thrown down an embankment and left to die in Boulder Colorado. When no family could be found, the people of Boulder gave to this stranger, a plot of her own in their local cemetery, beautiful flowers, a quite and peaceful service and this simple headstone “ Jane Doe, April 1954, Age about 20 years”
This stranger was almost forgotten until recently. Her case has been reopened. A clay reconstruction has been done to give her the beauty she may have had in life. And DNA collected for matching should her family be found.
Do you know who she is? http://www.boulderjanedoe.com

A mitochrondrial DNA profile (taken from one of Jane Doe's teeth) has recently been completed as confirmation of the previous nuclear DNA profile from a leg bone. The re-test also confirmed (again) that Twylia May Embrey is not Jane Doe"

Slain by serial killer Harvey Glatman?
Police in Boulder, Colorado have released a statement about a prime suspect in the murder of a young girl 52 years. Boulder Jane Doe remains unidentified but there may be a break in the case.
"We're looking at a serial killer from the late 1950's by the name of Harvey Glatman," said Det. Steve Ainsworth with the Boulder County Sheriff's office.
Ainsworth said Glatman lived in Denver at the time Jane Doe was found and abducted another girl from Boulder in 1945, but didn't kill her.
"I think he was just honing his craft, you might say," Ainsworth said.

"Jane Doe was, perhaps, Katherine or Catherine Dyer of Denver. And she may have been the first victim of serial killer Harvey Glatman."

The Boulder Jane Doe segment on "America's Most Wanted" has been rescheduled to July 8th. Please see www.boulderjanedoe.com for more information.
Also, see http://www.co.boulder.co.us/newsroom/templates/?a=472&z=2 for the Boulder County Sheriff's Office press release on its latest Jane Doe, an unidentified female found a few days ago in South St. Vrain Canyon near Lyons, north of Boulder CO. Hikers found her body, just as hikers found Boulder Jane Doe in 1954.

A recent photo-superimposition of a photo of Katharine E. Farrand Dyer and a cast of Boulder Jane Doe's face is so close that Katharine cannot be ruled out as Boulder Jane Doe. For the latest, and to see a photo of Katharine, please go to http://www.boulderjanedoe.com/index.cfm Thanks, Silvia Pettem

This is a very interesting case, and it looks like it MIGHT be solved after all these years. However, I can't help but think there was some pretty sloppy police work at the time her body was discovered.
A young woman is reported missing in Denver. Two weeks later, the body of a young woman is found near Boulder. It wouldn't have required computers or DNA for someone to compare the two cases, so it sounds like someone really dropped the ball way back in 1954.
However, the other possibility is that maybe the two cases WERE compared, and it was decided they weren't related for reasons we do not know...

Today, April 8, 2009, is the 55th anniversary of the day that two students found Jane Doe's body on the rocky edge of Boulder Creek, nine miles west of Boulder, Colorado. Of course we know a lot more about this murder victim today. Throughout the recent investigation, she gained an extended family of people who care. I will place red roses on her grave today on behalf of us all. For more information on this case, please see www.silviapettem.com

In yet another twist in the Boulder Jane Doe case, the most recent candidate for Jane Doe has turned up alive in Australia. Eliminating this lead is moving the case forward, allowing researchers and investigators to refocus on other missing young women of the 1950s. For more information, see www.silviapettem.com, particularly the Jane Doe Archives 2 page. I would love to hear from anyone with names of missing women prior to April 1954. Thanks.

Harvey Glatman was executed at San Quentin in 1959 for the murders of 2 of the 3 women he confessed to killing in California, in 1957 and 1958. He also spent most of the time from 1946 to 1951 in prison. However, from 1951 to 1957, he lived in Denver CO. Boulder Jane Doe was found near Boulder CO (30 miles away) in 1954. The circumstantial evidence is long and complicated, but we believe that Jane Doe may have been the first woman he murdered.
